    AECOM has an immediate opening for a Senior Archaeologist in our Phoenix, AZ office. The senior archaeologist will support all types of cultural resource studies primarily in Arizona and surrounding states. The studies could include records reviews, intensive cultural resource field surveys, archaeological excavations, and lab studies. Responsibilities include but aren't limited to the following:

    • Manage or assist in the management of cultural resource studies to facilitate their successful completion

    • Conduct archaeological fieldwork and compile field documentation. The work could require prolonged walking or standing on various types of terrain; extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt; bending, kneeling, and standing activities, and lifting and carry objects weighing as much as 50 lbs., all in outdoor environments, under a wide range of weather conditions.

    • Lead crews as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or field director including instruction of crewmembers in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, and making logistical arrangements

    • Manage artifact collections, guide laboratory analyses, and mentor new or inexperienced staff in proper field or lab methods and ensure lab protocols are followed

    • Write archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms in coordination with other team members and support staff

    • Travel as needed for project work and have a valid driver’s license

    • Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure projects meet AECOM quality and safety standards

    • Follows AECOM corporate policies and procedures

    • Assume personal responsibility for furthering capabilities to ensure career growth

    • Utilizes advanced scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to complex problems.

    • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and national regulations to ensure compliance. Work is performed with minimal direction.

    • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Responsible for advanced duties and activities in their specialized functional area.

    • Conducts research and does investigation work as required.

    • Plans and organizes project studies.

    • Assists in the resolution of conflicting technical information and unsuitability of standard procedures.

    • Performs complex assignments often requiring the development of unique solutions to problems.

    • Oversee the work of less experienced scientists.

    Minimum Requirements
    • BA/BS in anthropology or a related field + 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • MA or PhD degree in anthropology or a related field.

    • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible employment in cultural resource management including demonstrated supervision or management experience

    • Regional archaeological expertise in the Southwestern United States

    • Ability to design and supervise complex archaeological fieldwork, lab processing, and/or or technical analysis and report preparation

    • Manage budgets, supervise personnel, schedule staff and tasks related to specific projects

    • Manage or contribute to preparation of proposals

    • Strong technical writing skills

    • Writing and reviewing technical reports and research designs/treatment plans

    • Thorough understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106

    • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agency and tribal representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders

    • Strong work ethic, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent communication skills

    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Certification as principal investigator or field director for Arizona Antiquities Act permits and cultural resource study permits for other agencies

    • Experience with standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel).

    • Register of Professional Archaeologists certification

    • Experience working with tribal communities

    • Proficiency with geographic information system and database software

    The AECOM Central Region’s Cultural Resource Department is seeking creative, highly talented archaeological technicians for temporary, as-needed employment with our Phoenix, AZ office. Candidates could work on various cultural resource survey and archaeological excavation projects in the Southwest, and depending on the Department’s staffing needs, throughout the central U.S. This is a part-time variable position, meaning work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis. In most cases, this position reports to a field director or archaeological supervisor and must be able to work effectively in both field and laboratory settings, either independently or as part of a team. Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

    • Conducting archaeological survey and excavations

    • Documenting archaeological and historical resources; must be able to take accurate field notes, complete forms, and draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches

    • Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.

    • The position may require writing site descriptions and contributions to reports

    • Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts

    • Consulting with a supervisor about unusual problems and

    • Performs routine fieldwork working under close supervision.

    • Performs routine tasks in support of project staff and handles less complex duties.

    Minimum Requirements

    • GED

    • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior experience with implementing archaeological fieldwork logistics, protocols, and data collection

    • Knowledge of basic field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms

    • Ability to perform manual work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain and variable conditions including heat, cold, moisture, and dryness; working alone in isolated/remote areas; performing repetitive bending and stooping, standing/walking, power gripping (hand tools, levers, etc.), and fine hand movements; lifting 25 to 75 pounds; wearing personal protective equipment, including safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hat, long-sleeve shirts, and snake guards; working with arms above shoulder level; climbing ladders or stairs and working at heights or in confined spaces; working safely around heavy, moving, dangerous equipment; operating of vehicles; and performing keyboard/mouse operations

    • Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to collect and record archaeological data, including GPS applications and Microsoft applications

    • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions

    • Ability to write well, including artifact, feature, site, and landscape descriptions

    • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude.

    • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with other project staff

    • Flexibility to travel overnight and out of state for up to a month or more at a time

    • Undergraduate degree in anthropology, history, museum studies, or related field and have attended an archaeological field school.

    • 2+ years of experience in archaeological survey and excavation fieldwork and analysis in the Southwest

    • General familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and processes, including compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act and National Environmental Policy Act

    • Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material

    • CPR/First Aid Training

    Cornerstone is currently seeking a range of applicants across the Crew Member and Crew Chief (supervisory) experience levels for upcoming archaeological projects (primarily Class III archaeological surveys) for a variety of land jurisdictions in the region. Applicants are expected to have experience with:

     

    • Conducting fieldwork in a cultural resource management setting (ideally in the Southwest)
    • Orienteering and operating handheld Garmin and Trimble GPS receivers and iPads
    • Identifying archaeological artifacts and features
    • Archaeological site recording, including artifact identification and site mapping
    • Following agency standards and guidelines around archaeological survey and health and safety
    • A range of reporting objectives following fieldwork

     

    These positions are generally offered on a temporary basis, paid hourly, and offered per diem and/or accommodation if work is conducted outside of the Flagstaff area. Hourly wage is determined based on experience, with federal projects being subject to the Service Contract Act (SCA) wage scale. Further, Cornerstone understands that people work with others whom they trust, so there are longer-term and/or regular status opportunities for individuals who prove their worth!

     

    While Cornerstone is interested in seeing a variety of experience levels, all applicants must:

     

    • Hold a B.A. or M.A. in anthropology, archaeology or a related field
    • Be able to work in remote locations, often at an elevation exceeding 7,000 feet

    Job Description
    North Wind Resource Consulting is looking for a Full-time/Temporary Archaeological Field Technician in Phoenix, AZ.

    Work includes archaeological monitoring from January 2020 through January 2021. We are looking for qualified applicants who reside in the Phoenix metropolitan area.   

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    •Possesses the ability to work around heavy machinery and makes safety a priority.
    •Ensures that data collected is accurate, organized and of high quality.
    •Demonstrates the ability to accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features in trench profiles and in plan view.
    •Takes photographs of field work and maintains a daily log of activities.
    •Records archaeological features to specific guidelines.
    •Works well with project members and maintain a high level of communication regarding status of work product.
    •Operate a Garmin or Trimble GPS unit.
    Qualifications
    • Position will require extensive physical exertion, such as standing and walking up to 10 hours a day on uneven terrain in outdoor heat /cold stress conditions and weather elements such as wind or rain. 
    • Ability to carry up to 30 lbs. of equipment; ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Individual must be able to conduct these tasks while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment.  This work will be performed in an urban environment around heavy machinery.
    • M.A./B.A degree in Anthropology or a closely related field. 

    Desirable Skills:

    • Phoenix basin and Hohokam monitoring and excavation experience is desired. Applicants should have a knowledge of Hohokam archaeology.

    The Architectural Historian will be part of North Wind’s Historic Preservation Team (HPT), which provides a wide variety services associated with the identification, evaluation, and treatment of historic properties. They will also work with North Wind archaeologists on projects conducted under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and various state historic preservation laws. Other services that the HPT provides include, but are not limited to, historic property research and documentation, historic property planning surveys and historic preservation plans for local communities, National Register of Historic Places nominations and Determinations of Eligibility (DOEs), historic building and streetscape assessments, cultural landscape inventories (CLIs) and reports (CLRs), and supplemental historic preservation services to local governments. The Architectural Historian is responsible for gathering the information through historical research, field survey, and analysis needed to complete these and other types of projects, and works with other members of the HPT to produce technical reports and other deliverables that inform the decisions of clients and review agencies about the treatment of historic properties.

    Qualifications
    Qualified candidates must have a graduate degree in architectural history, history, public history, or historic preservation and the following: 

    •At least 3 years’ experience in conducting historic architectural property identification surveys and project effects assessments in
    compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA and state historic preservation laws;
    •Outstanding historical research, synthesis, and technical writing skills;
    •Strong knowledge of American historic architectural styles and property types and American history;
    •Ability to lead projects and contribute effectively as a team member;
    •Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision; and,
    •Schedule flexibility, including overnight travel with trips of varying lengths.
