    Tierra is currently seeking a motivated Cultural Resources Project Manager for our Tucson, Arizona location. The Project Manager is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program, responsible for directing the business aspects of cultural resource management projects, managing client relationships, supervising staff, successfully winning and executing projects, and leading all aspects of project implementation.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of National Environmental Policy Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Section 106, Section 110, and associated federal and state laws and regulations.
    • Experience working with various municipal, county, state, and federal agencies, tribes, and State and Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Heritage Management, or related field.
    • Five (5) years’ experience in cultural, heritage, and/or environmental compliance industry.
    • Permitted/permittable in Arizona (Arizona Antiquities Act Permit), Arizona Bureau of Land Management, and the Forest Service.
    • Valid Driver’s License.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Heritage Management, or related field.
    • Established relationships in the archaeological and environmental communities.
    • Qualified to be listed in Tierra’s cultural resource investigation permits for the State, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and other regulatory agencies.

    Historic Preservation Specialists perform professional cultural resource management activities in the form of statewide historic preservation efforts to ensure compliance with State and/or federal programs, laws, rules and regulations. This includes cooperating with other agencies and the public in conducting a comprehensive statewide survey of cultural resources and maintaining a paper, electronic, and/or GIS inventory of such properties; identifying and nominating eligible resources to the National and State Registers of Historic Places or recognizing resources by erecting State Historic Markers; preparing and implementing a comprehensive statewide historic preservation plan; assisting in the administration of the federal historic preservation assistance program within the State; advising and assisting as appropriate, federal and State agencies and local governments in carrying out their historic preservation responsibilities; cooperating with federal agencies, local governments and the public to ensure that cultural resources are taken into consideration at all levels of planning and development; providing public information, education, training and technical assistance relating to Federal and State Historic Preservation Programs; cooperating with local governments in the development of local historic preservation programs, and assisting local governments in becoming Certified Local Governments (CLGs); providing technical advice to the State of Nevada's Commission for Cultural Centers and Historic Preservation (CCCHP); managing the statutorily-mandated Nevada Site Stewardship Program; administration of the Comstock Historic District for the State as per the requirements of NRS 384; management of the Comstock History Center in Virginia City; administration of Nevada's Native American burial protection legislation. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform advanced-level work and may provide work direction and training to others.

    This position will serve as an archaeological reviewer in the Review and Compliance Program for the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office. The incumbent will recommend to State and federal agencies the kind and intensity of archaeological surveys and historic contexts and background studies to be conducted; review and provide comments on archaeological survey reports prepared in the State to ensure they meet federal and State standards; determine the adequacy of documentation for evaluation of cultural resources discovered; recommend whether or not to concur with federal agency determinations of significance and project related effects; conduct site inspections; provide advice and technical assistance to State and federal agencies regarding the treatment and stewardship of cultural resources; review and prepare technical papers at professional conferences and educate the public on preservation issues; and coordinate with other State and federal agencies to set standards for report writing, evaluation, stewardship, and mitigation of cultural resources. The incumbent will manage the Office's administration of the state's Native American Burial Protection statutes on behalf of the Administrator and will coordinate burial activities with Native Americans and other State agencies.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master’s degree from an accredited university in archeology, anthropology, architectural history, art history, history, historic preservation, cultural geography or related field and one year of professional experience in research, writing, or teaching American architectural history, restoration architecture, history, art history, or historic preservation with an academic institution; working for a professional historic preservation consulting firm or a Federal, state, or local entity performing historic preservation work in archaeological research, architectural history, history, or historic preservation; or managing and/or maintaining cultural resource databases to include the digitization of GIS data, data validation and normalization, and resolution of duplicates; OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in architectural history, history, art history, anthropology, historic preservation or closely related field and two years of professional experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Historic Preservation Specialist I level in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

    Aspen Environmental Group (Aspen) is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to fill an on-call position as a Project Manager for upcoming projects in Arizona.

     Required Education and Experience 

    • Must be permittable at the Principal Investigator or Field Director level on BLM, National Forest, and State lands in Arizona.

    • Must be knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations.

    • An M.A. or a Ph.D. in archaeology.  

    • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience in CRM; RPA certification preferred.  

    • Expertise in Arizona archaeology; familiarity with U.S. Forest Service Programmatic Agreements, BLM Management Manuals.  

    • Experience assisting agencies with tribal consultation/coordination is a plus. 

    • Experience in conducting pedestrian field survey using Trimble GPS and/or Fulcrum Smartphone technology in addition to illustrating site sketch maps and features accurately.  

    • Experience identifying southwest prehistoric and historic artifact classes and materials and faunal remains, 

    • Have a sound knowledge of soils, geomorphology and how to describe them. 

    • Experience in conducting test excavations and data recovery projects, and completing site forms accurately, succinctly; and quickly in the field using Aspen apps. 

    • Successful candidates must have the ability to maintain high quality field notes, keep good organization of field records, and maintain a professional demeanor in a variety of often strenuous outdoor and remote environmental work conditions. 

    • Experience with ESRI or Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) a big plus. 

    • Excellent writing skills and demonstrable experience in contributing to or preparing resource evaluation documents and technical reports. 

    • Successful candidates must have a valid AZ Driver’s License with a clean driving record and be comfortable working in strenuous hiking and harsh weather conditions.

    • Master’s degree in Anthropology and a minimum of 5 years’ related experience. Or, in lieu of a Master’s degree, possess a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and have a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
    • Ability to perform all aspects of archaeological fieldwork outdoors year-round within the U.S. Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, and Utah).
    • Meets Secretary of Interior Standards for conducting archaeological fieldwork.
    • Ability to obtain State and Federal permits to conduct archaeological fieldwork within U.S. Southwest.
    • Ability to obtain Principal Investigator status in the US Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, or Utah).
    • Ability to author records review, monitoring, survey, testing and data recovery reports.
    • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

    Terracon is hiring Assistant Scientists to support our cultural projects in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.     Position description: We have a variety of survey, excavation, and monitoring projects. This position will be primarily field-based, with the possibility of survey rotations that usually range for 8-10 days on 4-6 days off for the duration of the projects.     The City of Mesa, Arizona, is seeking a new director after the retirement of long-time director Tom Wilson. The Director (City title: Museum Administrator) is a senior manager within the City’s Arts and Culture Department and reports to the Director of Arts and Culture. This position leads the museum staff, setting programmatic, research and operational priorities, articulating and leading the implementation of vision and long-term strategies, and acting as the liaison to the AZMNH Foundation, a 501(c)3 support organization. AZMNH’s next director should be an experienced, visionary, creative and skilled leader, able to work with staff and volunteers to enhance the museum’s programs and facilities. Significant knowledge of anthropology/archeology, paleontology, natural history and museum practices are strongly desired, with an advanced degree in one of those fields at the master’s level required.

    Supervises members of the Historic Preservation Team (HPT), and manages the cultural resources review of development projects in accordance with applicable regulations under the general direction of the Cultural Resources Program Manager. Reviews and approves documentation required under 36 CFR 800.11 in support of environmental review under ADOT's assumption of Federal responsibility for Categorical Exclusions and ADOT's assumption of responsibility for NEPA Program Assignment.

    Manages and oversees schedules, consultant contracts, budgets, the preparation of required documentation that is legally sufficient and defensible in the court of law, and coordinates timely completion of project deliverables for cultural resource analyses, consultation, permitting, and NEPA/Environmental authorizations in accordance with federal and state law.     The Center for Digital Antiquity, in the School for Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC), is devoted to enhancing preservation of and access to irreplaceable archaeological records and data.  Digital Antiquity supports archaeological research, resource management, education, and public outreach by providing new and innovative ways of finding, managing, preserving, and using archaeological information.  Archaeologists, computer scientists, and information management experts have created Digital Antiquity with two basic goals.  One is to improve substantially the ease of accessing and using archaeological information.  The other, equally important, is to provide for the long-term preservation of the irreplaceable records of archaeological investigations.

    Reporting to the Director of the Center for Digital Antiquity, the Program Manager is responsible for assisting with budgeting, marketing/sales, and strategic planning. The Program Manager assists with planning and implementing Digital Antiquity’s activities and operations, which includes helping to establish a long-term vision for the Center.

    The Program Manager oversees the preparation of proposals for continued funding; acts as the primary liaison with current funding source; supervises the preparation of budget proposals; recommends the allocation of resources within the limitations of the budget. Directs the recruitment of local participants within the region utilizing the most appropriate promotional and marketing methods. Establishes and maintains liaison with regional, state, and national organizations involved in the implementation of technology.
