Terracon is hiring a Senior Staff Scientist to support our cultural projects in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.
General Responsibilities:
Conduct cultural records reviews, archaeological surveys, Phase I testing, Phase II data recovery, archaeological monitoring, archaeological mitigation, preparation of archaeological plans and reports, and contribute cultural information for environmental documents Identify, evaluate and recommend risk and mitigation strategies/designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Prepare applicable risk assessments and technical documents including proposals, reports and regulatory agency correspondence.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- Mid-level, experienced scientific professional responsible for conducting site testing and making recommendations for systems design on medium sized projects with a variety of complexity.
- Participates with more senior scientists on large, more complex projects.
- Performs survey, monitoring, and excavation fieldwork assignments, often serving as field lead and/or project manager for given assignment.
- Implements technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to sample, test and collect data and/or document site activities.
- Responsible for developing written proposals to clients for both small and large projects including quality control review of proposals written by others.
- Evaluates complex laboratory and field data and assembles in written reports.
- May serve as team member or lead in meetings and communications with client pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in Anthropology and a minimum of 5 years’ related experience. Or, in lieu of a Master’s degree, possess a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and have a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
- Ability to perform all aspects of archaeological fieldwork outdoors year-round within the U.S. Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, and Utah).
- Meets Secretary of Interior Standards for conducting archaeological fieldwork.
- Ability to obtain State and Federal permits to conduct archaeological fieldwork within U.S. Southwest.
- Ability to obtain Principal Investigator status in the US Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, or Utah).
- Ability to author records review, monitoring, survey, testing and data recovery reports.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Desired qualifications:
- Possess Principal Investigator status on an Arizona Antiquities Act permit.
- Possess General Archaeological Investigation Permit for archaeological investigations on New Mexico state lands.
- Completion of an archaeological field school in the US Southwest.
