Terracon - Assistant Scientist

Terracon is hiring Assistant Scientists to support our cultural projects in Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. As an Assistant Scientist at Terracon, you will join an experienced, collegial team conducting cultural records reviews, archaeological surveys, Phase I testing, Phase II data recovery, and archaeological monitoring. If you have the skills and interest, you will also help prepare technical documents (site forms, survey and excavation reports, etc.) and assist in artifact processing and analysis in our lab facilities.

General Responsibilities:
Position description: We have a variety of survey, excavation, and monitoring projects. This position will be primarily field-based, with the possibility of survey rotations that usually range for 8-10 days on 4-6 days off for the duration of the projects. For remote projects we stay in hotels if available; occasionally a project may require tent or RV camping if other accommodations are not possible.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
  • Gather data and information for evaluation by other team members.
  • Performs tasks related to field survey, monitoring, and excavation.
  • Tabulate and prepare data for written reports.
  • Operate field data collection equipment
  • Transport material samples or documents to the lab for further testing and analysis.
  • Other duties, where skills and interest coincide
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or related science field, or passing grade in an archaeological field school, or 1 years supervised experience as an archaeological field technician
  • Ability to complete field-related survey and excavation tasks in a desert environment year-round
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Desired qualifications:
  • Passing grade in an archaeological field school in the US Southwest or Northern Mexico
  • Prior experience conducting contract archaeology in the US Southwest or Northern Mexico
