    AECOM is seeking a seasoned senior archaeologist to be based in our Phoenix, AZ office.

    Job duties and responsibilities include but aren't limited to the following:

    • Utilizes advanced scientific principles, theories, practices and existing technologies to develop technical solutions to complex problems.

    • Interprets and records data, conducts analyses, compares findings to relevant studies and local, state, and national regulations to ensure compliance. Work is performed with minimal direction.

    • Exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment. Responsible for advanced duties and activities in their specialized functional area.

    • Conducts research and does investigation work as required.

    • Plans and organizes project studies.

    • Assists in the resolution of conflicting technical information and unsuitability of standard procedures.

    • Performs complex assignments often requiring the development of unique solutions to problems.

    • Oversee the work of less experienced scientists.

    • The senior archaeologist will support all types of cultural resource studies primarily in Arizona and surrounding states. The studies could include records reviews, intensive cultural resource field surveys, archaeological excavations, and lab studies.

    • The senior archaeologist will manage or assist in the management of cultural resource studies to facilitate their successful completion.

    • Conduct archaeological fieldwork and compile field documentation. The work could require prolonged walking or standing on various types of terrain; extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt; bending, kneeling, and standing activities, and lifting and carry objects weighing as much as 50 lbs., all in outdoor environments, under a wide range of weather conditions.

    • Lead crews as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or field director including instruction of crew members in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, and making logistical arrangements.

    • Manage artifact collections, guide laboratory analyses, and mentor new or inexperienced staff in proper field or lab methods and ensure lab protocols are followed.

    • Write archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms in coordination with other team members and support staff.

    • Travel as needed for project work and have a valid driver’s license

    • Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure projects meet AECOM quality and safety standards.

    • Follows AECOM corporate policies and procedures.

    • Assume personal responsibility for furthering capabilities to ensure career growth.

    Minimum Requirements

    • BA/BS in anthropology or a related field. + six years of progressively responsible employment in cultural resource management including demonstrated supervision or management experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • MA or PhD degree in anthropology or a related field.

    • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible employment in cultural resource management including demonstrated supervision or management experience.

    • Regional archaeological expertise in the Southwestern United States, particularly southern Arizona

    • Ability to design and supervise complex archaeological fieldwork, lab processing, and/or or technical analysis and report preparation.

    • Manage budgets, supervise personnel, schedule staff and tasks related to specific projects.

    • Manage or contribute to preparation of proposals.

    • Strong technical writing skills.

    • Writing and reviewing technical reports and research designs/treatment plans

    • Thorough understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106.

    • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in project needs.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of colleagues, clients, agency and tribal representatives, construction contractors, and other project stakeholders.

    • Strong work ethic, demonstrated leadership ability, excellent communication skills.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Certification as principal investigator or field director for Arizona Antiquities Act permits and cultural resource study permits for other agencies.

    • Experience with standard Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel).

    Primary Responsibilities

    In the role of Cultural Resource Specialist 2, a mid-level cultural resources position, we’ll count on you to:

    • Provide support to and work with senior-level cultural resources staff on all aspects of cultural resources projects
    • Supervise field crews in archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery
    • Write and review technical reports at a professional level
    • Assist with preparation of research designs, agreement documents, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and Section 106 consultations.
    • Perform archaeological fieldwork independently
    • Conduct background and archival research
    • Make National Register of Historic Places site evaluations and recommendations for treatment
    • Demonstrate a commitment to data confidentiality agreements and professional ethics standards

    Required Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology  or closely related field
    • 5+ years experience in cultural resource management in Arizona or adjacent states
    • Meet Secretary of Interior qualifications;
    • demonstrated knowledge of Arizona prehistory and history and material culture;
    • Demonstrated experience writing technical reports, and, ability to write at a professional level.
    • Candidates should have demonstrated understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA),
    • Experience conducting and supervising fieldwork, research, interpretation of field data, QC reviews, and the regulatory framework for cultural resource management in Arizona. 
    • The candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with clients, contractors, and fellow employees.
    • Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). 
    • Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
    • Must demonstrate knowledge of and experience with project compliance-related activities including consultation, quality assurance and reviews
    • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions

    Primary Responsibilities

    The Arizona/New Mexico Traffic Engineering Business Class Manager is a professional that is well versed in all aspects of traffic engineering related services for transportation, water, power and oil and gas projects within our Transportation Business Group and manages a group of up to 10 business group professionals spread over our AZNM Area offices.  The primary duties of the Traffic Engineering Business Class Manager include: responsibility for area coordination, monitoring and improvement of technical competencies of business class staff and products to meet client needs and market drivers all within the direction and goals of business class plans;  participation in delivery of project services to meet client expectations;  collaboration on business class efforts with area operations, marketing and project management;  participation in business class practice and professional discipline groups, project teams and activities to continually improve standards and best practices; implementation of effective quality assurance and quality control reviews;  participation in regional business class strategic planning, budgeting and plan implementation; tracking staff workloads and utilizations; establishing internal and external training programs and training schedules; assist with business development efforts and provide support on proposal preparation; plan for project needs and recruit/hire staff accordingly, and drive the business class to meet project goals for growth, client satisfaction, and service diversification.

    The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico seeks a Director for the Office of Contract Archeology (OCA) to lead a dedicated staff conducting innovative cultural resources management research in a University setting.     Under indirect supervision from the Director of the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the OCA Director (formal University administrative title Associate Director, Maxwell Museum) provides integrated management and professional leadership to the Office of Contract Archeology. Establishes and implements organizational goals and operating procedures for the OCA. Directs, coordinates and oversees multiple contract/grant funded research projects and programs, working with diverse clients, governmental agencies, community members and University programs, offices, and faculty and staff. Plans and manages annual budgets for the organization. Develops strategies for generating revenues and resources for the OCA. Provides professional and technical leadership and mentoring to a team of 8-12 full-time and 10+ part-time staff and student employees.     Minimum Qualification

    Doctorate degree in a related Archeological field; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

    Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Record of conducting substantive archaeological research in the context of cultural resource management programs.
    • Demonstrated ability to consistently obtain and manage cultural resource management contracts and grants as Principal Investigator and/or program director.
    • Experience supervising staff (>15 persons) and large projects.
    • Knowledge of the archaeology of the greater Southwest, particularly of New Mexico.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal cultural resource laws and regulations.
    • Demonstrated experience of successful interactions with diverse clients, government agencies, and communities, and University students, programs and administrative units.
    • Record of publications including professional journals and technical publications, and record of presentations at professional conferences and meetings.
