  • Crew Chief, Tucson, Arizona

    The Tucson office of Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a multidisciplinary cultural resources consulting firm, has one full-time, salaried position immediately available for a Crew Chief. SRI provides comprehensive cultural resource management services to private and government clients at the federal, state, and local levels throughout the western United States from offices in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington. SRI is a member of the American Cultural Resources Association.
    At SRI, CCs are responsible for assisting project directors (PDs) and principal investigators (PIs) in implementing survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery plans and for coordinating through the appropriate channels all field and analytical tasks associated with fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation.  CCs are responsible for supervising field staff; descriptive report writing; and for ensuring, along with other project management staff (e.g., PDs and PIs), that all tasks associated with project implementation are accomplished professionally and in a timely and fiscally responsible manner. The position will also involve but not be limited to out-of-town traveling, fieldwork, and archival/Class I research. 

    SRI is seeking an individual with extensive experience with the archaeology of southern and central Arizona and with regional cultural resource management practices. Experience with both prehistoric and historical-period archaeological resources, including material culture, is desirable. The ideal candidate will possess superior writing, communication, and organizational skills and a keen attention to detail. We are seeking an individual with the experience to assist in completing a variety of small- to mid-sized projects independently and who can be identified as a candidate for promotion to assistant project director/project-director status in the short-term future. A Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is required.

    SRI offers a compensation package that includes competitive pay; medical coverage; retirement plan; and paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave.   • Laboratory Technician, Tucson, Arizona

SRI provides comprehensive cultural resource management services to private and government clients at the federal, state, and local levels throughout the western United States from offices in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, and Washington. SRI is a member of the American Cultural Resources Association.

    Tasks to be performed by the LT include entering and checking field data into SRI's database; washing and sorting artifacts; processing flotation samples; rebagging, labeling, and tagging artifacts; and the preparation of materials for analysts, testing labs, photography, and curation. The LT will also assist the Laboratory Director with laboratory support duties, including but not limited to assisting with the daily upkeep of company vehicles, preparing and buying equipment for fieldwork, and ordering supplies.

    SRI is seeking an individual who has experience using a variety of computer programs, particularly database programs. A successful candidate must possess superior organizational skills, a keen attention to detail, a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn and execute new tasks, and legible handwriting. Candidates must also be focused, capable of performing repetitive tasks throughout the workday, and able to lift up to 40 lbs. A bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field is required.

    SRI offers a compensation package that includes competitive pay; medical coverage; retirement plan; and paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave. Other benefits include working as a part of one of the largest groups of cultural resources professionals in North America and the opportunity to contribute to SRI's innovative research program. The LT position has a beginning annual salary of $31,200.00.

    JULIAN D. HAYDEN STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

    The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society and Arizona Archaeological Council are pleased to announce the fourteenth annual Julian D. Hayden Student Paper Competition, named in honor of long-time southwestern scholar, Julian Dodge Hayden. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $750, a two-year membership in AAC  and publication of the paper in Kiva, The Journal of Southwestern Anthropology and History. The competition is open to any bona fide undergraduate and graduate student at any recognized college or university. Co-authored papers will be accepted if all authors are students. Subject matter may include the anthropology, archaeology, history, linguistics, and ethnology of the American Southwest and northern Mexico, or any other topic appropriate for publication in Kiva.

     

    Papers should be no more than 8,000 words (approximately 25 double-spaced, typewritten pages), including figures, tables, and references, and should conform to Kiva format.

     

    If the paper involves living human subjects, authors should verify, in the paper or cover letter, that all necessary permissions to publish have been obtained. Previous entries will not be considered, and all decisions of the judges are final. If no publishable papers are received, no award will be given. Judging criteria include, but are not limited to, quality of writing, degree of original research and use of original data, appropriateness of subject matter, and length.

     

    Deadline for receipt of submissions is January 14, 2013; late entries will not be accepted. Send four copies of the paper and proof of student status to: Julian D.   • AAC annual Board of Directors call for candidates

    The AAC is looking for volunteers and nominations to stand for election to the Board of Directors of the organization. Positions that need to be filled for 2013 include two at-large seats on the Board, and the officer position of President Elect. 

    Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to consider volunteering... it was not a planned thing, but the current 2012 board suffers from a lack of diversity. We want to fix this.

    Section 106: An Introduction

    Learn the basics of project review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This seminar emphasizes practicalities-how to avoid pitfalls and victimization by myths. Discuss recent changes in regulations and procedures, with an emphasis on coordination with the National Environmental Policy Act and other laws. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org.
     
    Consultation and Protection of Native American Sacred Lands
    Phoenix, AZ undefined October 18-19, 2012
     
    Explore the consultation process mandated by federal laws as it pertains to Native American sacred lands. Review the guidelines from both tribal and federal land-managing agencies’ perspectives. Consider the legal, historical, and cultural factors that influence consulting parties. Discuss ways to use the consultation process in conjunction with other tools, such as land trusts, restrictive covenants, and property purchases by tribes or nonprofit conservancies, to achieve a protected status for culturally significant places. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org.

    Scholarships. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for scholarships covers the cost of tuition for qualified applicants to attend NPI seminars in targeted cultural resource management areas.

    Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) of  Tempe ,  Arizona , is seeking to hire a ceramic analyst. The ideal candidate will have experience in Southwestern ceramic types and current archaeological ceramic analysis methods and theory; familiarity with the petrofacies model of ceramic temper distribution in southern  Arizona  is desirable. This individual must have at a minimum a Master’s degree in anthropology (with an emphasis in archaeology) or a related field. Complementary skills (e.g., lab management, GIS, geoarchaeology, or archaeological field direction) are a strong plus. In addition to conducting laboratory analyses, this individual will work closely with other specialists to produce integrated technical reports; therefore, excellent writing skills are essential to this position.

This individual must have a Master’s degree in anthropology (with an emphasis in archaeology), biology, or a related field.     Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) of Tempe, Arizona, is seeking to hire a Laboratory Manager. The ideal candidate will have experience in both managing an archaeological laboratory and in Southwest ceramic analysis. Although Southwest ceramic analysis is not essential, an alternative skill set is essential for ensuring a full-time position. The duties of the position involve management of processing, storage, and curation of archaeological collections, which may go to a number of curatorial facilities, each with its own set of requirements. Management of the company’s vehicles and field equipment is central to the position, as is participation in management of the physical plant. This individual must have a Master’s degree in Anthropology and excellent writing skills.
