Section 106: An Introduction

Learn the basics of project review under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. This seminar emphasizes practicalities-how to avoid pitfalls and victimization by myths. Discuss recent changes in regulations and procedures, with an emphasis on coordination with the National Environmental Policy Act and other laws. An agenda is available online at www.npi.org.
Consultation and Protection of Native American Sacred Lands

Explore the consultation process mandated by federal laws as it pertains to Native American sacred lands. Review the guidelines from both tribal and federal land-managing agencies’ perspectives. Consider the legal, historical, and cultural factors that influence consulting parties. Discuss ways to use the consultation process in conjunction with other tools, such as land trusts, restrictive covenants, and property purchases by tribes or nonprofit conservancies, to achieve a protected status for culturally significant places. LA/CES. These seminars meet the criteria for programs in the American Society of Landscape Architects Continuing Education System and ASLA members will receive 6 learning units each day.

Advanced registration is available until September 6 for $600 (3 days – 106 Intro) / $450 (2 days – Consultation) / $900 (5 days – both seminars). After that date, the regular registration rate is $650 (3 days – 106 Intro) / $500 (2 days – Consultation) / $950 (5 days – both seminars).
Scholarships. A National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for scholarships covers the cost of tuition for qualified applicants to attend NPI seminars in targeted cultural resource management areas.
