    CULTURAL RESOURCE SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER

    Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. of Tempe, AZ (ACS) is seeking to hire a cultural resource Senior Project Manager. The successful candidate will:

    Have a Masters degree in Anthropology (Archaeology);

    • qualify as a Project Director on an Arizona state permit;
    • have at least 10 years of experience in archaeology;
    • have at least three years experience managing multiple small projects simultaneously and providing support for larger projects;
    • have an understanding of cultural resource compliance within the framework of NEPA; and
    • have a close familiarity with the performance of such tasks under ADOT contracts.

    In short, we are looking for a detail-oriented multi-tasker who is able to get started in the very near future and can contribute to project management right away. The M.A. and qualifications for the Project Director on an Arizona state permit are must-haves; although the other requirements listed are more flexible, keep in mind we are looking for a highly experienced person. 

    The duties of this position involve completing cultural resource clearance projects from project initiation through project implementation and close-out, including preparing scopes and budgets for proposals of all types, permit applications, conducting some fieldwork, and preparing technical reports and agency consultation letters.

    The duties of this position regularly require sitting at a desk and using hands to manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse as well as paper work products. They will sometimes include in-town or out-of-town fieldwork, which would require standing, walking or climbing into and out of trenches and excavation units, using hands to manipulate items and to lift or carry them, talking, and hearing. They occasionally require crossing uneven terrain, climbing over fences, and stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. All employees must be able to follow instructions, ask questions when needed, be able to work independently once parameters have been set, and work cooperatively as part of a team, at both the project and company-wide levels.

    The pay level is competitive and commensurate with experience. This is a salaried position, exempt from federal labor laws, eligible for the full ACS benefits package, including vacation, 10 paid holidays, sick leave, a significant portion of the employee’s health and dental insurance paid under the company plan, and participation in a 401(k) program after six months.

    Dr. James Schoenwetter (January 2, 1935 - August 22, 2015) was born on January 2, 1935 and passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2015.

    Dr. Schoenwetter, Professor Emeritus at ASU, received his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1967. Schoenwetter joined the department faculty in 1967, following four years at the Laboratory of Anthropology at Santa Fe, New Mexico, and retired in 2000. His research interests were in the areas of prehistoric cultural ecology, applications of pollen analysis in archaeology and research methodology.

    Prior to retirement, he directed the department's palynology laboratory. Pollen research by Schoenwetter and his students involved a variety of sites in Mesoamerica, North America and Europe, and continued through his retirement. He has directed archaeological and botanical fieldwork in the Midwestern and Southwestern United States, California, Oaxaca, Zacatecas, Jalisco, England and France.

    Dr. Schoenwetter pioneered the study of pollen records from archaeological site-context deposits in the Southwest and Midwest in the 1960s, identified palynological evidence of Archaic Horizon maize cultivation in Arizona, Illinois and Mexico in the 1970s and was among the earliest students of the palynological records of historic archaeology site-context deposits. He consulted with students and archaeologists on the development of methods of pollen analysis for the resolution of archaeological problems and prepared a body of unpublished reports and meeting papers written during his research career.

    Dr. Schoenwetter was a resident of Tempe, Arizona.

    The University of Oklahoma’s Department of Anthropology seeks to hire a tenure-track archaeologist at the Assistant Professor level, to start August 15, 2016. The successful candidate will help fulfill the strategic priorities of the department and its archaeological subfield. The archaeology subfield is focused on the history and cultures of Native North Americans, with an emphasis on the Great Plains, Southwest US, and Southeast regions. Additionally, the hire will help create opportunities of collaboration within our department, as well as across academic units and provide essential mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students with interests in Native North America.

     

    Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in the post-Paleoindian archaeology of the Greater American Southwest, methodological expertise complementary to other faculty, and teaching experience. Applicants must have a PhD by the start date and be committed to a four-field anthropological approach. The normal teaching load is two courses each semester.     The Journal of Arizona Archaeology, Volume 3 (Nos. 1 and 2)

     

    Volume 3 of the Journal of Arizona Archaeology addresses recent research conducted in the Middle and Lower Verde Valley. The papers were initially delivered as part of the Verde Valley Archaeological Conference, and the conference organizers, Todd W. Bostwick and Stewart Deats, are the guest editors for the issue. To facilitate the review process the editorial panel has been increased to eight people, and now includes Su Benaron, Todd Bostwick, Chris Garraty, Billy Graves, Chris Loendorf, Doug Mitchell, Alanna Ossa and Josh Watts. The volume is scheduled to be published in the late fall of this year. My thanks to the guest editors, the editorial panel and the authors of the papers for the contribution of their time and professional expertise in bringing the next issue of the Journal to press.

    I am pleased to announce that Dr. Glen Rice has graciously agreed to become the new Editor of the Journal of Arizona Archaeology. Dr. Rice brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the task.  His first priority is the completion of the proceedings of the 2012 Verde Valley Conference, which will Volume 3, Parts 1 and 2 bound together in a single issue. The issue is on track to be distributed by the end of 2015. Assisting Glen will be an expanded editorial panel including Alanna Ossa, Billy Graves, Chris Garraty, Chris Loendorf, Doug Mitchell, Joshua Watts, Su Benaron, and Todd Bostwick.     Harris Environmental Group, Inc. is seeking an archaeological Principal Investigator (PI) to direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients. Archaeological experience in the Southwestern United States is required. The position will assist with project development, direction, coordination and quality control for cultural resource management projects while expanding our archaeological and historical consulting team. Responsibilities will include project direction (including fieldwork and travel), training of staff, oversight of field directors, and producing quality reports, managing multiple projects, and budgets. Responsibilities also include marketing and proposal writing. Candidates must have an M.A. in Anthropology or Archaeology and a minimum of five years of work experience and two to three years experience as a PI. Candidates must meet the Arizona State Museum’s qualifications for PI. Compensation package will be commensurate with experience.

     

    Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Ensure that all fieldwork, analysis, and report production is conducted to professional and SHPO/ASM standards and guidelines
    • Remain current with agency requirements for conducting cultural resources work
    • Manage budgets, prepare proposals, reports, and other technical documents, monitor field procedures, and author research designs, treatment plans, and other technical documents
    • Oversee field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production
    • Establish project procedures and budgetary restraints and assure that projects are concluded within budget and on time
    • Conduct content edits of technical reports
    • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner

     

    Qualifications:

    • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology or related field
    • At least two years supervisory and fieldwork experience in CRM or equivalent position, and experience working NHPA compliance
    • Ability to be listed on our various federal and state cultural resource permits
    • Experience with content edits of reports and a strong background in scheduling and budgeting
    • Ability to train, coordinate, and oversee personnel
    • Exceptional technical writing skills and a record of completing and editing technical reports on deadlines
    • Experience with Section 106 compliance, NEPA, and other relevant compliance processes
    • Ability to work independently as well as oversee small or large projects

    “Archaeological Field Technician”

    FIELD OPERATIONS DIVISION / WILDLIFE CONTRACTS BRANCH / PHOENIX BASED 

    REGULAR APPOINTMENT / PART TIME / FLSA-Non-Exempt

    GRADE 16 (Hiring hourly range $14.14-$18.00)

    Description of Duties: Under general supervision, duties will include performing a variety of technical and professional cultural resource management work in support of the Department’s Cultural Resource Compliance Program (CRCP) archaeologist/ project director.  Duties may also include assistance to project managers in one or more wildlife management and/or research programs in the wildlife contracts branch.  Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: assisting with the necessary planning, research, and preparation for Class I and III cultural resource surveys; assisting with various Class III intensive pedestrian surveys or monitoring projects in a variety of natural environments around the state; recording prehistoric and historic resources utilizing a Trimble Geo XH 6000 series handheld GPS unit and other field recording devices; aiding the AGFD CRCP project director with the preparation of Class I and III cultural resource reports; and filling out proper state and federal cultural resource forms, photo logs, site forms; As well as, preparing documents for determinations of eligibility to the State and National Register of Historic Places.  The successful applicant must have flexible availability to accommodate dynamic project schedules.  Frequent travel to different areas of the state will be typical.  Depending on the area of the state, camping may be required for the duration of a project.  Assignments may require extended periods working and residing in primitive field conditions and operating a variety of water and land vehicles.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate will have knowledge of/in: federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures appropriate to assignment. Candidate must possess cultural resource management and archaeological knowledge sufficient to perform the duties assigned, including; proper operation, maintenance and basic repair of field equipment and vehicles.  Candidate must possess critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary for duties assigned by the CRCP project director. The ideal candidate will have the skills to learn and apply more specific and/or advanced policies, procedures, and techniques, basic professional standard data collection, analysis, mathematics, basic report preparation methods, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.   The candidate must have the ability to: interact with the public and apply public relations; work alone and as part as a team; able to work outdoors in primitive field conditions that may sometimes be in extreme climates; as well as hike, backpack and/or camp overnight for extended periods of time.  Candidate must have the physical ability to bend, kneel, stand, lift, hike over 10 miles a day, and carry at least 50 pounds while performing fieldwork.

    The preferred candidate will have:

    • A Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, and at least three years of cultural resource management experience.  Candidates with a bachelor’s degrees and at least 4 years of field experience as an archaeological technician will be considered.  Candidates must demonstrate experience in excavation, pedestrian survey, and monitoring.
    • Demonstrated working experience in the southwestern United States.
    • Experience collecting data in the field, processing that data in the office/lab, and assisting with the preparation of cultural resource compliance reports or research publications.
    • Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination, a background check and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.  Position requires possession of or ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
