The AAC Board-of-Directors is seeking to fill four seats for Board Members whose terms expire at the end of 2017. Open positions for 2018-2019 include President-elect, Treasurer, and two at-large members. The Treasurer and at-large members hold office for two years; the President-elect holds office for three years. March is Arizona’s Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month (AAHAM). Throughout Arizona, many organizations contribute to celebrating Arizona’s diverse and exciting prehistory and history through lectures, tours, and demonstrations. We have scheduled the kickoff meeting for August 29 at 10 am in room 250 of the ADEQ building at 1110 W. Washington Street in Phoenix. Please join us as we will be selecting a new theme for this year’s AAHAM and will be brainstorming on possible poster ideas. All are invited to attend. All members of the Arizona Archaeological Council are cordially invited to attend our 2017 annual conference on Friday October 6th at the Moose Lodge in beautiful Star Valley, AZ. The theme of this year's conference is Occupation of the Hinterlands. We purposely selected a broad topic to encourage a more diverse group of presenters, so please consider submitting an abstract. We are excited to host this year's conference at a new location. And what self-respecting archaeologist can say no to pine trees, crisp fall air, and a venue with a bar attached? We encourage folks to stay the night; designated drivers will be available to transport people back to their hotels if needed.

Following Friday's conference, Scott Wood has graciously offered to give a tour of ongoing investigations at Goat Camp Ruin, a 25+ room pueblo located at the northern end of Payson. The tour will begin at 9:00am and likely last an hour.

PaleoWest Archaeology is looking to immediately fill crew chief and crew positions for multiple projects based out of our Phoenix, Arizona office. Successful crew chief candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Anthropology, or have commensurate supervisory experience with Southwest archaeology. Crew members must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or another applicable field and have experience conducting archaeological survey in the Southwest. Pay will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience. Camping may be required for certain projects; however, a generous per diem will be provided for camping projects. Successful candidates should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized, and able to walk several miles per day over uneven terrain. All candidates will work under the supervision of a Field Director or Project Director. Familiarity with GPS units and digital data collection are a plus but not required. The Arizona State Museum (ASM) invites you to a first in a series of SB 1418 Public Forums related to its new proposed rate and fee structure for mandated cultural resource management services: Tuesday, 13 June, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Sonoran Room at the Hilton El Conquistador, in Oro Valley. The Forum is being held in conjunction with the 2017 Arizona Historic Preservation Conference, but conference registration is not required to attend and no RSVP is required.

The purpose of the SB 1418 Forum is to listen to cultural resource management (CRM) stakeholders and improve articulation between the proposed rate and fee structure and CRM business practices.

While the forum is designed to be a moderated, focused discussion, if you are interested in a broader overview of SB 1418 and changes to ASM's cultural resource management service rates and fees, ASM's Director, Dr. Patrick Lyons, will be speaking on this subject in a conference session on Thursday, 15 June, from 9:50 am to 10:40 am. Attendance at this session requires conference registration.

Hello – We would like to invite representatives of the professional archaeological community to visit the Florence Copper Project on Monday, 12 June 2017. As some of you know, WCRM has been conducting archaeological investigations within the Escalante Ruin Group in advance of a pilot Production Test Facility since August of last year. We would like to share our findings with you, and will welcome your input concerning the work we’ve accomplished to date.

Appended is a map showing the project location. A WCRM representative will meet you at the gate and provide directions. The roads are graveled and can easily accommodate passenger vehicles. We ask that you park and gather at the Administration Building between 9 and 9:30 AM for a brief introduction. A bus will be available to transport you throughout the mine property. At 10 AM we will proceed to the project area where we will spend about an hour touring the excavations. At 11 AM we will drive a short distance to see the platform mound that was excavated by Dave Doyel in the early 1970s.

We should have you back to the Administration Building by noon.

Be aware that it will be hot and dusty. Wear sturdy footgear, and bring a hat. If any of you own safety vests, please bring them along. We will have bottled water available.
