    Summary:

    The position completes the cultural resources reviews for all the federal-aid projects. This position also assists with maintenance work orders, disposals, material source pits, and other state funded projects. This position is responsible for ensuring the technical completeness of documentation, is part of the Historic Preservation Team and will be supervised by the Historic Preservation Team Lead.

    Duties:

    Manage and oversee consultant activities relating to archaeological surveys, site flagging, monitoring, testing, and data recovery; and assessment of historic buildings and structures. Review technical reports, including overviews, surveys, testing and data recovery work plans, and final data recovery reports for adequacy and compliance. Work with consultants to ensure delivery of product by project deadlines.

    Coordinate and consult with other state and federal agencies, local governments, and tribes on cultural resources and historic preservation issues, including site eligibility and project effects. Prepare and review Section 106 documents, including Memorandum of Agree ment, Programmatic Agreements, and letters. Develop requests for proposals as necessary and review consultant proposals and budgets. Provide cultural resource input to environmental documents.

    Telephone and email consultation, project facilitation, and answering questions to facilitate the project management process.

    Communicate with Historic Preservation Team Lead/Cultural Resources Program Manager on a weekly basis to ensure adequate review of work projects, inform HPT Lead of potential problems in the completion of the work that may affect project schedules or budget, and discuss with HPT Lead difficult or complex projects. Fill in for Planner III on an as-needed basis during flex days, vacation, sick days to ensure continuity and flow in the project clearance process and serve customers.

    Work on emergency, non-standard or accidental discovery projects to ensure agency compliance with appropriate cultural resource laws. Review projects and update project reports and databases for tracking.

    Participate in team, group, and miscellaneous meetings and training as required by the supervisor. Must be able to drive a state vehicle during the course and scope of work.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

    State, Federal, Tribal, local agency policies, procedures, and regulations to effectively manage and facilitate cultural resources clearances/projects.

    Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

    Principles of historic preservation, archaeological methods, and Arizona history and prehistory

    Verbal and written communication and facilitation to interact daily with ADOT personnel, outside agency personnel, tribes, consultants, and the public.

    Project management to facilitate completion of large projects on tight and often changing schedules.

    Phone and email usage; skills  to address archaeological data recovery situations.

    Google Systems and Basic computer skills, use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positions System (GPS), are desired, but not required.

    Manage multiple tasks, while shepherding large projects through a complex and often changing process

    Preference:

    Additional training in Section 106 of NHPA, Arizona Historic Preservation Act, and other State and Federal cultural resource law.

    Experience collecting class I data (AZSITE, HPT Portal, City of Phoenix database, GLOs, etc.). 

    Field experience in prehistory and historic archaeology.

    Experience in drafting small survey and monitoring reports.

    Requirements:

    This position requires possession of a Bachelor’s degree or above in archaeology, anthropology, history or in a related field.

    This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.

    Position Summary:

    Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a multidisciplinary cultural resources consulting firm, has several temporary, full-time, hourly positions available for archaeological Field Technicians headquartered from SRI’s Tucson office. Although temporary, we anticipate that work will continue minimally through Fall, 2023 Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must also have a minimum of 1–2 years of field experience (i.e., survey, testing, and data recovery) and be physically fit and able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (i.e., extreme heat or cold). Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.     Job Description:

    Reporting to the Project Director and Crew Chief, archaeological Field Technicians are responsible for conducting reconnaissance survey, the establishment of grids, artifact collection, test unit and feature excavation, and documentation. To this end, archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

    • Conduct archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery
    • Point-locate observation and surface collection units as well as surface artifacts using a Trimble global positioning system (GPS) receiver

    EnviroSystems is seeking archaeological field technicians to conduct cultural resource compliance projects for federal, state, and commercial clients. The position requires the capability to perform cultural resources surveys and other archaeological projects in remote locations and over steep terrain, and often requires camping. Therefore, a clean driving record and the ability to work out-of-town for multiple sequential field sessions are also essential.

    The successful candidate(s) will possess some level of experience in cultural resources survey, site recording and site significance evaluations. Experience with archaeological testing and data recovery is a plus but is not required. Candidates will be trained, if necessary, in completion of survey forms (from a variety of states and federal agencies), operating cameras, and GPS units. The candidates(s) also should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized.

    Responsibilities

    • Fieldwork will range from camping for up to 8 or 10 consecutive days but could include Monday through Friday work for more local projects.

    Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a cultural resources management (CRM) consulting firm, has a long-term, full-time, position available for a Project Director (PD) based out of its Tucson, Arizona office. SRI provides comprehensive CRM services to private and government clients at the federal, state, and local levels throughout the western United States from offices in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Washington.

    Minimum qualifications and Experience:

    The ideal candidate will have an MA or MS degree in anthropology with a focus in prehistoric archaeology, be Register of Professional Archaeologist certified, and possess a minimum of five years of field experience with at least two years demonstrable experience as a field supervisor on survey, testing, and/or data recovery projects. Prior experience working in the U.S. Southwest and Great Basin, a working command of federal and state cultural resource statutes and regulations, and demonstrable experience serving as lead author for Section 106 compliance reports will also be viewed favorably.

    SRI offers a compensation package that includes an annual pay range between $58,000 and $75,000 and which will be commensurate with the applicant’s credentials, experience, and industry standards.     Job Description:

    The position of PD is responsible for preparing and implementing survey, testing, monitoring, and data recovery plans, including all field and analytic tasks associated with fieldwork, analysis, and report preparation. This work routinely involves traveling and/or fieldwork. The PD is responsible for report writing and for having a solid understanding of the basics of CRM.

    For small- and medium-sized projects, the PD will report directly to a principal investigator (PI) or senior project director (SPD), though the PD is still ultimately responsible to the PI for that project. For larger projects, the PD will work with an SPD and/or the PI and the project manager to ensure that all project tasks are accomplished in a timely, fiscally responsible, and professional manner.

    A PD will typically work on 2–3 projects simultaneously and is expected to be able to multitask. PDs are responsible for training crew members and crew chiefs in archaeological field methods and in-office descriptive writing tasks. The ability to work harmoniously and productively with other SRI staff and clients is essential. Finally, SRI PDs are expected to professionally perform their responsibilities and to remain professionally active in the CRM discipline.

    Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately May-March, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

    This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. Selectees will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements. Selectees are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. Typical non-pay status will be during the off-season which occurs in April. This is an advance trainee position to prepare incumbent for higher-graded positions in the career ladder.

    • Incumbent is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the condition of cultural resources of the parks
    • Observes or identifies park cultural resource problems or potential problems that can be corrected or mitigated by immediate attention, or, with more complex problems, incumbent recommends and participates in the development and implementation of plans to address the problems.
    • Management tasks and/or developmental assignments would include but not limited to drafting workplans and implementing those workplans
    • Participating as a team member on complex restoration projects
    • Collecting field data contributing to the basic cultural resources inventory of a park or monitoring program to assess status and trends of cultural resource conditions
    • Incumbent will follow accepted field data collection protocols and reporting
    • Coordinates site visits by various NPS offices and/or professional under contract pertaining to cultural resources management
    • Prepares funding proposals to address research and management needs for cultural resources

    Incumbent will also seek out training opportunities and educational activities that will increase their knowledge and understanding of the park's cultural resources in the context of the cultural and natural environment.

    Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
