    Colliers Engineering & Design (CED) is a leading engineering and environmental consulting firm with a rapidly growing archaeological practice dedicated to preserving and interpreting cultural heritage. We provide comprehensive cultural resource management services across diverse industries and landscapes, with a strong focus on the Southwest and Arizona. Our team is expanding, and we are seeking a full-time Principal Investigator (PI) with deep expertise in Southwest archaeology and regulatory compliance to help lead projects and mentor staff.  We have 3 offices in the Phoenix, AZ area and this position can be located in either our Phoenix, AZ office or Gilbert, AZ office.

    Responsibilities

    • Serve as Principal Investigator for cultural resource projects, including Class I, II, and III surveys and testing and data recovery projects.
    • Develop and implement project-specific research designs and methodologies.
    • Lead compliance efforts with Section 106 of the NHPA, NEPA, ARPA, NAGPRA, and state/local regulations.
    • Supervise and mentor field directors, crew chiefs, staff archaeologists, and field technicians.
    • Coordinate with clients, SHPO, ASM, federal and state agencies, and Tribal Nations to facilitate consultation and compliance.
    • Oversee the preparation of high-quality technical reports, management summaries, and deliverables.
    • Manage project budgets, schedules, and staffing to ensure efficiency and profitability.
    • Contribute to business development, including proposal writing, budgeting, and cultivating client relationships.
    • Remain current with archaeological research, regulatory developments, and best practices in cultural resource management.
    • Establish & maintain positive relationships with co-workers, support and build others on the team and across disciplines/offices.
    • Working in various terrains and environments throughout the year.
    • Performing physical tasks in the field which may include regular carrying of equipment (20-50 pounds).
    • Occasional local and overnight travel may be required.


    Qualifications

    • Master’s or PhD Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or another closely related field.
    • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in cultural resource management.
    • Demonstrated expertise in the archaeology of the Southwest and Arizona.
    • Experience in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, and/or Colorado strongly preferred.
    • Experience leading Class I, II, and III surveys, testing, and data recovery projects.
    • Knowledge of Arizona permitting processes (ASM, SHPO) and federal permitting.
    • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
    • RPA certification or ability to obtain.
    • Existing working relationships with Tribal Historic Preservation Offices (THPOs) in the region.
    • Familiarity with geospatial and archaeological software (ArcGIS, Collector, Trimble, etc.).
    • Experience conducting public outreach and interpretation of archaeological resources.
    • Proven experience managing budgets, schedules, and staff.
    • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
    • Ability/willingness to lift equipment or objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability/willingness to walk long distances on rugged terrain.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Graduate degree (M.A. or Ph.D.) from an accredited college or university in history, archaeology, anthropology, historic preservation, or a closely related field as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment and three years’ experience in cultural resources management, historic preservation or a related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment which includes two years of supervisory and/or managerial experience AND meets professional qualifications for either a “Project Director” or “Principal Investigator” per rules implementing the Arizona Antiquities Act (A.R.S. 41-841, et seq., 41-865) AND meets Secretary of the Interior Professional Qualifications Standards for archaeology or architectural history or historic architecture.

    Harris Environmental Group, Inc.is seeking an archaeological Principal Investigator (PI) to direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients. Archaeological experience in the southwestern United States is preferred, as the person in this role should hold or be eligible for Arizona PI certification. The position will assist with project development, direction, coordination and quality control for cultural resource management projects. Responsibilities will include project direction (including some fieldwork and possibly travel), oversight of field directors, producing quality reports, managing multiple projects, and assisting the CRM team with budget and proposal planning.

    Summary

    Environmental factors

      Must have adequate academic credentials to satisfy requirements of U.S.D.A. Forest Service to conduct cultural resource and/or biological assessments concerning threatened and endangered species and a comprehensive knowledge of pertinent environmental laws.
    • ISA Certified Arborist and Utility Specialist certifications, USFWS Sub-permittee registration and applicable Arizona State Pesticide certification preferred.

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Project Archaeologist - Field Director to support our Flagstaff, AZ Cultural Resources Team. Under the supervision of Cultural Resources Team Leads and Project Managers, an Assistant Project Archaeologist–Field Director performs field and office tasks while working with and supervising crew members. The role will be primarily field-based.

    The Field Director will manage all aspects of fieldwork, supervising one or more crews of archaeological surveyors, monitors, and/or excavators. They may also assist with office-based tasks, including preparation of site forms and technical reports in support of a variety of renewable energy, oil and gas, energy transmission, transportation, and land development projects. Some projects include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates and often require travel and overnight stays. Project-related travel and lodging costs are covered, and per diem is provided for project work requiring overnight stays.

    Anticipated fieldwork will occur throughout Arizona, across various land jurisdictions. The candidate may be asked to submit to background screening to work in some of these locations.     What you will accomplish

    • Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensure quality and completeness of data collected.

    • Has led crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
    • Excellent leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
    • Has demonstrated skills relating to QA/QC review of field documents and site forms.
    • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes), plus additional hours organizing paperwork/emails daily.
    • Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Ability to provide guidance and feedback on crew performance as per company guidelines.
    • Has enough experience to be able to rationally deal with the unexpected (changes in weather, changes in client demands, changes in crew makeup or size, etc.).
    • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads.
    • Applicant must be willing to participate in a drug testing and alcohol screening as part of the pre-employment process, as some projects require such screenings.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • A master’s degree in in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field.
    • Four (4) years or more of experience working as a field archaeologist in the Southwest.
    • Candidates who meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology.
    • Qualified for listing on the AAA blanket survey permit, BLM Statewide Arizona Cultural Use Permit, and/or National Forest permits as a Field Director.
    • Possess advanced skills and knowledge in one or more specialty areas. Of particular interest are lithic analysis, geoarchaeology, and historical archaeology.
    • Experience writing technical archaeology reports to SHPO standards.
    • Knowledge of federal and state preservation laws and regulations including, but not limited to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
    • CPR and First Aid certified.
