    Primary Responsibilities

    In the role of Cultural Resource Specialist 2, a mid-level cultural resources position, we’ll count on you to:

    • Provide support to and work with senior-level cultural resources staff on all aspects of cultural resources projects
    • Supervise field crews in archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery
    • Write and review technical reports at a professional level
    • Assist with preparation of research designs, agreement documents, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and Section 106 consultations.
    • Perform archaeological fieldwork independently
    • Conduct background and archival research
    • Make National Register of Historic Places site evaluations and recommendations for treatment
    • Demonstrate a commitment to data confidentiality agreements and professional ethics standards
    • Demonstrate an interest and willingness to learn and accept increasing responsibility for tasks

    Required Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology  or closely related field
    • 5+ years experience in cultural resource management in Arizona or adjacent states
    • Meet Secretary of Interior qualifications;
    • demonstrated knowledge of Arizona prehistory and history and material culture;
    • Demonstrated experience writing technical reports, and, ability to write at a professional level.
    • Candidates should have demonstrated understanding of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA),
    • Experience conducting and supervising fieldwork, research, interpretation of field data, QC reviews, and the regulatory framework for cultural resource management in Arizona. 
    • The candidate will have strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with clients, contractors, and fellow employees.
    • Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures). 
    • Candidates should also have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.

    • Must demonstrate knowledge of and experience with project compliance-related activities including consultation, quality assurance and reviews

    Logan Simpson, an environmental planning, cultural resources, and landscape architectural design firm, is currently hiring for two full-time Senior Archaeologist/Project Manager positions in our Tempe, Arizona and Flagstaff, Arizona offices.

    Duties and responsibilities include planning and managing all phases of cultural resources projects including survey; archaeological monitoring, testing and data recovery; technical report production; preparing scopes of work and cost estimates; and meeting project scope, schedule, and budget obligations. This position requires the individual to be self-motivated and work well in a team-oriented setting.

    Individuals must have a proven background supervising and mentoring staff as well as frequently interacting and coordinating with clients and agency representatives in a decision-making role.     Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS), a 43-year-old environmental planning firm in Tempe, Arizona, is seeking to hire a cultural resource Principal Investigator (PI). The successful candidate will:

    • have a Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Anthropology (Archaeology);
    • qualify as a Project Director and Principal Investigator for our Arizona state permit (requirements can be found here: https://statemuseum.arizona.edu/crm/documents);
    • have 10 or more years of experience in archaeology (Southwest preferred), with two as a PI; 
    • have three or more years of experience managing multiple small and mid-size projects and providing support for larger (>$1M) projects;
    • have an understanding of cultural resource compliance within the framework of state and federal regulations;
    • have a track record for conducting and reporting on relevant research; and
    • ideally, have a close familiarity with the performance of such tasks in Arizona and under ADOTcontracts.

    The graduate degree and qualifications for the Principal Investigator on an Arizona state permit will be shown preference; we may be able to work with you on achieving the specific combination of experience ASM requires for the PI if you qualify as a Project Director. The successful candidate’s experience must include project management; working with clients and regulators; assessing National Register of Historic Places eligibility; preparing research designs, treatment plans, and budgets for proposals of all types; monitoring field progress, coordinating with the lab and with report authors, writing and compiling reports, and drafting consultation documents. Experience managing projects with budgets over $200,000 is desired. Strong supervisory, writing, and verbal communication skills are essential, as is attention to detail.     North Wind Resource Consulting is looking for experience Archaeological Field Technicians for the Flagstaff and Phoenix areas.

    Duties will include:
    •Ensures that data collected is accurate, organized and of high quality.
    •Demonstrates the ability to accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features
    •Takes photographs of field work and maintains a daily log of activities.
    •Records sites to the particular agencies’ stipulations and guidelines.

    Qualifications
    Physical Demands:

    Position will require extensive physical exertion, such as walking up to 10 hours a day over steep, uneven, heavily wooded, rough terrain in outdoor heat /cold stress conditions and weather elements such as wind, snow or rain.   Ability to carry up to 30 lbs. of equipment; ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.; potential contact with poisonous plants, insects and animals.  Individual must be able to conduct these tasks while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. 
     
    Projects may include camping for 8-day sessions in forest settings. Interested applicants should be safety minded and be able to take direction from Field Directors. 

    Ideal applicants should be pursuing a bachelors degree or have received a degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a closely related field. Previous experience in archaeological survey is preferred.

    CPR and First Aid certification desired. 

    Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
    Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check.

    AECOM has an immediate opening for a Senior Archaeologist in our Phoenix, AZ office. The senior archaeologist will support all types of cultural resource studies primarily in Arizona and surrounding states. The studies could include records reviews, intensive cultural resource field surveys, archaeological excavations, and lab studies. Responsibilities include but aren't limited to the following:

    • Manage or assist in the management of cultural resource studies to facilitate their successful completion

    • Conduct archaeological fieldwork and compile field documentation. The work could require prolonged walking or standing on various types of terrain; extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt; bending, kneeling, and standing activities, and lifting and carry objects weighing as much as 50 lbs., all in outdoor environments, under a wide range of weather conditions.

    • Lead crews as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or field director including instruction of crewmembers in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods, and making logistical arrangements

    • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible employment in cultural resource management including demonstrated supervision or management experience

    • Regional archaeological expertise in the Southwestern United States

    • Ability to design and supervise complex archaeological fieldwork, lab processing, and/or or technical analysis and report preparation

    • Manage budgets, supervise personnel, schedule staff and tasks related to specific projects

    • Manage or contribute to preparation of proposals

    • Strong technical writing skills

    • Writing and reviewing technical reports and research designs/treatment plans

    • Thorough understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 106
