    Congratulations to the Phoenix Mapping Archaeology Project (PMAP) team for receiving a 2024 Geospatial Volunteer of the Year award at the Arizona Geographic Information Council (AGIC) conference in Prescott. Supported by S'edav Va'aki Museum, the team is working on large-scale digitization of archaeological sites in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The team is led by City Archaeologist Laurene Montero and includes Zach Rothwell (Chronicle Heritage), Stephanie Sherwood (Desert Archaeology), Doug Mitchell (S'edav Va'aki Museum), Steve Rascona (ADWR, retired), Dr. Mary Whelan (ASU, retired), Margaret Tueller (WSP), Lauren Tennison (Northwind), Dr. Matt Peeples (ASU), Dr. Chris Caseldine (ASU).     During the 20th annual Arizona Historic Preservation Conference held in Tucson, 10 honorees were selected for the Annual Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honor Awards.

    Since 1982, the Arizona Preservation Foundation and State Historic Preservation Office have partnered to present the Governor's Heritage Honor Preservation Awards. The awards recognize people, organizations, and projects that represent outstanding achievements in preserving Arizona's prehistoric and historic resources.

    The top honor of the luncheon, the James W. Garrison Heritage Award, was given to Pima County's restoration of Canoa Ranch. The award, named for a retired state historic preservation officer, is selected by Governor Katie Hobbs from all conference award winners. The Award is named for longtime State Historic Preservation Officer, Jim Garrison.

    The 2023 Governor’s Heritage Preservation Honorees are as follows:

    • Benedictine Apartments Rehabilitation Project, Tucson
    • Tohono Restoration – Conservation of Art San Xavier del Bac Mission, Pima County
    • Douglas R. Mitchell Lifetime Achievement
    • George Dvorak, Volunteer Fort Verde State Historic Park, Camp Verde
    • Jacobson House Rehabilitation Project, Tucson
    • Kiva Craft Center Rehabilitation, Scottsdale
    • Manning House Rehabilitation Project at Canoa Ranch, Tucson
    • Scott Newth, Volunteer, Sedona
    • Simpson Rowhouse Rehabilitation Project, Tucson
    • U.S. Customs House Rehabilitation Project, Naco

    Two web applications that are invaluable for resource management and research in the Southwest US, cyberSW and SKOPE, are now interoperable. cyberSW is an online database that integrates Southwest US settlement and artifactual data from more than 25,000 archaeological sites. SKOPE provides painless access to high spatial and temporal resolution reconstructions of precipitation and temperature over the last 2000 years for the 4 Corners states.     The Zuni World: A:shiwi A:wan Ulohnanne Exhibit Virtual Program Series

    Before the exhibit The Zuni World – A:shiwi A:wan Ulohnanne comes to a close this September, join the S’eḏav Va’aki Museum (formerly Pueblo Grande) for a three-part free virtual program series. Two of the three programs will be fully virtual via WebEx, the third program will by hybrid via WebEx and in person at the Museum.

    The first program will be on Wednesday, July 26th, from 12-1:30pm. Artists featured in the exhibit The Zuni World, A:shiwi A:wan Ulohnanne will discuss their artwork and their involvement in the Zuni Map Project.
