    Arizona State Museum at the University of Arizona is in search of a Technician, AZSITE Database (Geographic Information Systems Professional I). The primary role of this position is to perform checks and preprocessing on geospatial and attribute data prior to upload to the AZSITE cultural resources geodatabase. The Technician assists the Database Specialist in developing and utilizing internal data management tools and techniques. The Technician also performs some public-facing duties such as updating and maintaining the AZSITE website, recording AZSITE Consortium Executive Management Board Meeting minutes, and communicating with users.

    This position has a workstation and office space at the Arizona State Museum on the University of Arizona main campus. Remote work is possible if you have a computer and internet connection to connect to your workstation remotely.

    The successful candidate will have strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple workflows. A background in archaeology is desirable but not required. Experience with ArcGIS Pro and relational databases is a plus.

    AZSITE is a Geographic Information System (GIS) that serves as Arizona’s consolidated geodatabase of recorded cultural resources, including prehistoric and historic sites and properties, and surface surveys. AZSITE is a collaborative project of the AZSITE Consortium, established under Arizona Executive Order 2006-03 and consisting of the Arizona State Museum on the University of Arizona campus, the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change, the State Historic Preservation Office, and the Museum of Northern Arizona.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Validate geospatial and attribute data relating archaeological surveys and sites prior to upload to the AZSITE database. Perform quality control on data already in the databases, including evaluating and addressing correction requests from the ARO and the AZSITE user community. These processes require attention to detail with GIS software and geoprocessing techniques, problem-solving skills, and familiarity with relational databases. Education with archaeology or similar disciplines is helpful but not required. (80% of effort)
    • Work with the AZSITE Database Manager to develop and implement updates to AZSITE workflows, applications, informational materials, and user forms. Compile data extracts for users requesting AZSITE data for their project areas. This component involves creative thinking, problem solving, and GIS, database, and programming skills. (10% of effort)
    • Assist with AZSITE public-facing and administrative responsibilities, including user account management, user communication and listserv management, recording AZSITE Consortium Executive Management Board Meeting minutes, and maintaining and updating the AZSITE website. This component requires attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills, and basic or advanced web development. (10% of effort)

    Project Director

    Job Description:

    The purpose of this role is to develop, direct, and complete archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and data recovery). Projects may be located in the Southwest and/or Great Basin. Below is a list of duties for this position:

    Minimum Pay: $52,000 annual

    Duties:

    • Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
    • Develop, direct and participate in all types of archaeological investigations
    • Adhere to project schedules
    • Supervise junior staff
    • Prepare technical reports documenting the results of fieldwork and archival research
    • Perform technical and copy editing for cultural resource submittals
    • Evaluate and make recommendations regarding ARHP/NRHP eligibility and treatment of, as well as project effects to, cultural resources

    EnviroSystems is seeking to fill one permanent full-time position in our cultural resources department and seeking candidates for the 2024 Field Season.

    PROJECT DIRECTOR – Fulltime/Permanent – $52,000 to $65,000/year commensurate with experience

    The successful candidate either will be currently permitted or meet the qualifications to be immediately permitted as a Project Director/Field Director with a variety of public land managing agencies at the Federal and state level with particular emphasis the on U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, and in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. Experience in California, Idaho, west Texas, and western Colorado is also beneficial but not necessary. The position requires the ability to supervise cultural resources surveys and other archaeological projects in remote locations and over steep terrain, and often requires camping for a week or more at a time. Therefore, a clean driving record and the ability to work out-of-town for multiple sequential field sessions are also essential. The successful candidate will provide demonstrable expertise supervising all aspects of cultural resources survey, site recording and site significance evaluations, as well as technical report writing. Experience with archaeological, monitoring, testing and data recovery is a plus but is not required. Candidates should be well-versed with the completion of survey forms (from a variety of states and federal agencies, but particularly those noted above), operating GPS units with a data recorder, and conducting quality control/quality assurance reviews of data. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of Federal cultural resources regulations (particularly National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 compliance), the ability to coordinate and communicate with agencies and clients and manage budgets and schedules. The candidates also should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in Anthropology or Archaeology and a minimum of five years of work experience as a supervisory archaeologist (e.g., Crew Chief, Project/Field Director). This position also has potential for advancement to Principal Investigator/Project Manager, if or when the candidate meets the necessary requirements. The ideal candidate is someone who desires a long-term career in archaeology/CRM (preferably with EnviroSystems) with advancements in responsibilities and commensurate compensation based on demonstrable abilities and competence.

    Job Description:

    The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the USFS, is recruiting Archaeology Crew Members to complete Section 106 Cultural Resource surveys, site recording and monitoring for various projects within the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit in the Sierra Nevada mountain range (USFS Region-5 locations). These projects all serve Cultural Resources Services program’s greater mission of helping the USFS in their critical goal of improving forest resilience in the face of worsening climate conditions and increased wildfire threats. The work that you will do directly improves the quality of these forests helping ensure they continue to thrive for generations to come.

    This work provides professional development and leadership opportunities in cultural resource management including increased exposure and responsibility enacting USFS processes, procedures and compliance measures; assisting in reporting and data entry/quality assurance and control. Expanded opportunities and exposure to additional disciplines (e.g., forestry, wildlife, hydrology, etc.) and projects may exist.

    Archaeology technicians perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project implementation. Crew size will range between 2-6 people.

    Primary archaeology field duties will include:

    • Collaborate with Archaeology crew lead and agency staff to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation and reporting efforts;
    • Complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources;
    • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments;
    • Prepare California DPR site records, GIS maps, and photographic records in addition to inputting data to the USFS heritage database.

    Contract Timeline:

    Start and end dates may vary according to local conditions: Tentatively mid-May through mid-November.

    Location:

    We are hiring for multiple positions in the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit encompasses over 154,000 acres of National Forest lands around beautiful Lake Tahoe! These positions will be based in South Lake Tahoe, California.

    Compensation and Benefits:
    • Wage: $21/hour with overtime at 1.5x hourly rate. Full time, average 40 hours per week. 
    • Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance premiums are covered 100% by GBI. Available on the first day of the month following the start of employment.
    • Shared housing provided.
    • Camping Per Diem: $15/night as necessary.
    • Uniform Stipend.

    Job Qualifications:

    At Least one of the Following:

    • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology or related discipline (by position start date);
    •  Six months of professional fieldwork experience;
    • An accredited archaeological field school and relevant field methods training coursework.

    Other Required:

    • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;
    • Ability to work effectively in a team setting with USFS staff, GBI staff, interns, volunteers, academic, state, and federal partners;
    • Ability to work safely and productively in remote field settings under adverse conditions. This includes occasionally overnight camping in remote areas for consecutive nights;
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to work cooperatively as well as independently;
    • Proficiency in navigation using GPS, topographic map and compass.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Fieldwork experience & familiarity with the cultural history and forested habitat of the Sierra Nevada region;
    •  Familiarity with Section 106/110 NHPA and California and/or Nevada SHPO compliance procedures;
    • Advanced skill using specialized software such as Microsoft Office Suite, ArcMap GIS, and Google Earth;
    • Ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads.

    The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified NAGPRA Project Lead to manage, under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Repatriation in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository, tasks associated with curation and Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) compliance for Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR)collections. The NAGPRA Project lead will oversee the locating, documenting, and preparing of ABORNAGPRA collections. Additional duties include conducting background research to determine archaeological and cultural context through archival documents, and assisting with the creation of relevant documents for curatorial management and NAGPRA compliance.

    To prepare these collections in accordance with Center for Archaeology and Society Repository processes, relevant collections must be located, documented, assigned artifact types for cultural affiliation, cataloged according to contemporary archaeological and museum collection management standards and best practices, assessed for removal provenience and context, and the collection information entered into relevant databases.

    Essential Duties

    • Oversees and assists with the transformation of record inventory data.

    • Oversees the locating and transport of archaeological objects for inventory.

    • Identifies and matches potential NAGPRA objects with information in field notes, collections databases, and other archival records.

    • Organizes site materials (including archaeological collections and associated documents).

    • Prepares reports (both preliminary and final) to confirm/update existing Notices of Inventory Completion/Notices of Intent to Repatriate and document transfer.

    • Supervises funerary object documentation activities of student interns and workers.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience eand/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience working with NAGPRA related collections documentation (1-2 years)

    • Demonstrated knowledge of the archaeology and material culture, history, and ethnography of the American Southwest

    • Evidence of a Bachelor’s degree with a focus in archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies

    A Museum Collections Specialist performs a variety of specialized assignments involving the care and documentation of a diverse collection of museum specimens.  Duties may include the management of one or more subject areas of the collection.  The Museum Collections Specialist is responsible for handling, preparing, installing, transporting, and storing specimens according to accepted museum principles; recording information concerning specimens and inventory; maintaining files; photographing and digitizing the collections; monitoring expenses, maintaining collection storage areas; performing minor conservation of specimens.  Compliance with state and federal rules and regulations including reports.  This class indexes, catalogs and numbers specimens, writes condition reports, performs data entry, scans photographs and enters them into the database, edits catalog information to summarize and standardize terminology, records information concerning specimens and inventory, and produces reports from a computerized database.  The Museum Collections Specialist also assists with updating policies and procedures, training and supervising volunteers, working with donors, and packing/unpacking loaned objects.  This class performs related duties as required.

    The Museum Collections Specialist is supervised by a Museum Curator who reviews work through conferences, meetings, and results achieved.  This class is FLSA nonexempt.
