SWCA Environmental Consultants is actively seeking to fill three cultural resources positions to support our Phoenix Office and general Arizona Cultural Resources team. These are a regular, full-time positions. Candidates local to the greater Phoenix metropolitan area are strongly preferred.
Senior Project Manager – Cultural Resources
What you will accomplish
- Project implementation to include staffing, fieldwork, research, report writing, and Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) review.
- Maintains good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients
- Nurtures and develops client relationships
- Oversees personnel on specific projects.
- Collaborates with SWCA’s managers, directors, and principal investigators on technical and business development efforts throughout the company.
- Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance and is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.
- Collaborates as part of an interdisciplinary environmental team.
- Assists in the continuing development of SWCA’s Cultural Resource Program and expands SWCA’s professional reputation in cultural resources consulting and research throughout California and beyond.
Experience and qualifications for success
- Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
- Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of cultural resources experience supporting a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies, with increasing levels of responsibility.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Cultural Resources Management in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
- Experience managing CRM projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
- Qualified for listing on state and federal archaeology permits Arizona statewide.
- Extensive experience with Arizona archaeology, or similar cultural area.
- Demonstrated experience in federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to the management of cultural resources (NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA)
- Has completed all aspects of a project, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
- Has provided QA/QC review of field documents, site forms, and reports.
An employee in this Phoenix, Arizona-based position can expect an annual salary of $90,480/year - $120,640/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Project Manager – Cultural Resources
What you will accomplish
- Manage and participate in all aspects of cultural resources projects successfully, including budgeting, scheduling, research, fieldwork, report writing, curation.
- Collaborate with other project managers across offices and disciplines to successfully meet client and agency needs.
- Work with clients and agency representatives for successful project implementation.
- Prepare and create technical, high-quality proposals, work plans, reports, and literature reviews with little supervisory oversight.
- Oversee fieldwork and deliverables, adhering to SWCA’s Quality Assurance/ Quality Control (QA/QC) program.
- Work independently in a responsible manner, resolving project challenges.
- Work within defined schedules and meet deadlines.
- Follow all health and safety procedures.
Experience and qualifications for success
- Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in environmental consulting, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
- Demonstrated expertise in federal, state, and local cultural resources laws and regulations.
- Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours will be required on certain projects.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Currently reside in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area or plan to relocate there in the immediate future.
- Must have a valid driver's license, the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle background screening, and have access to reliable transportation.

Assistant Project Archaeologist - Field Director
What you will accomplish
- Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensure quality and completeness of data collected.
- Data QA/QC, organization, and tracking; field GPS data collection using tablets and Geodes.
- Ensure that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are prepared for fieldwork.
- Accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features, and train less experienced field crew in their identification.
- Create and maintain good morale among field crew and mentor junior staff.
- Assist with office-based tasks, including performing Class I literature reviews, research, site forms, technical report preparation, developing and tracking scopes of work, schedules, and budgets.
- Communicate effectively when reporting to Team Leads, Principal Investigators, and Project Managers.
- Work independently in a responsible manner.
- Work within defined schedules and meet deadlines.
- Follow all SWCA health and safety procedures.
Experience and qualifications for success
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field is required.
- Minimum three (3) years or more of experience working as a field archaeologist in the Southwest.
- Has led crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
- Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation, and paperwork are complete.
- Excellent leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
- Has demonstrated skills relating to QA/QC review of field documents and site forms.
- Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes), plus additional hours organizing paperwork/emails daily
- Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
- Ability to provide guidance and feedback on crew performance as per company guidelines.
- Has enough experience to be able to rationally deal with the unexpected (changes in weather, changes in client demands, changes in crew makeup or size, etc.).
- Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads.
An employee in this Phoenix, Arizona-based position can expect an hourly rate of $26.00/hour - $33.00/hour.
