DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Environmental Specialist is responsible for environmental planning, review and related environmental compliance and natural resource management as it relates to the Gila River Indian Community. In particular, the position focuses on ensuring compliance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and related environmental laws for projects on Community lands, especially realty actions (e.g. leasing, rights of way).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare, review, analyze, and modify National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents and related natural resource management documents for Community lands.
  • Provide expertise on matters relating to environmental planning, environmental compliance, and natural resource management for community lands.
  • Conduct field surveys and assessments of plant and animal species within project areas on Community lands, and write reports on the survey findings.
  • Prepare comments and coordinate with federal agencies, tribal departments and consultants for the preparation of environmental impact statements, natural resource management plans and related documents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of environmental planning and natural resource management.
  • Ability to analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Intermediate computer skills including using MS Word, MS Excel and preferably MS Access and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Officials and the general public.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management or closely related field, and a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible experience in environmental planning or natural resource management, or any combination of education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of this position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT:

Tribal Driving Permit can be required.
