Desert Archaeology - Cartographic Technician

Desert Archaeology is seeking a full-time Cartographic Technician to join our team of mapping/GIS specialists in our Tucson, Arizona office. We are looking for candidates who bring the qualities of motivation, self-reliance, ability to work independently within a distributed team structure, creative problem solving within your area of expertise, and a desire to develop as a cartographer working in a consulting archaeological company.

Desert Archaeology is a small, woman-owned business working primarily in Arizona, with occasional work in California and New Mexico. Offices are in Tucson and Tempe.

Position Description

The Cartographic Technician will work in a team setting to support planning archaeological field projects, real time field mapping during projects, and the creation of final products for meetings and reports within a data-oriented company workflow. The ideal candidate will have a general land surveying background; competencies and familiarity with current and near-current GIS, GPS, and GNSS instrumentation and data collection processing; and a general interest in the fields of cultural or natural resources. Fieldwork will be both in-town and out-of-town. The candidate should be able to troubleshoot standard equipment problems during fieldwork.

The job requires drafting and cartography skills using Autodesk products complemented by a wide suite of database, GIS, and supporting software, as well as experience developing topographic, planimetric, and thematic maps from ground measurements and GIS data sources. The candidate should have the ability to work within a mixed CAD and GIS structure to automate mapping, cartography, and graphics production for non-technical end users.

The Cartographic Technician will be responsible for managing time and resources to assist multiple small and large projects with variable priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to use consumer grade GPS, L1 GIS-grade GPS, L1/L2 survey-grade GPS, and GNSS full-constellation receivers for static, kinematic, and network measurements
  • Familiarity with field data collectors and tablets
  • Competency with land surveying methods and techniques
  • Use of drafting, mapping, and database software to support the identified tasks
  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Cloud GIS development
  • GIS/database analysis
  • Civil engineering/land development
  • UAV operation/pilot certification
  • Graphic design
  • Photogrammetry/3D modeling
  • Lidar

Compensation commensurate with experience.
