Junior Archaeologist

Job Summary

The Archaeologist II position will support all types of cultural resource studies including records reviews, intensive cultural resource field surveys, archaeological excavations, and lab studies. The incumbent will provide field, lab, and office support for cultural resource projects primarily in Arizona and surrounding states. The incumbent will have knowledge of field excavation techniques, ability to use (and instruct others in the use of) applicable technology such as global positioning system instruments, the ability to process (wash, catalog and label) recovered archaeological artifacts, and be able to properly fill out field and laboratory forms and assist in report preparation. In the field, the incumbent will conduct excavation of test units and features; and map and document the work, and be able to lead small field crews under the direction of the field director or principal investigator. The position may require extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt. The incumbent should have the ability to perform bending, kneeling, and standing activities, and be able to lift and carry objects weighing 50 lbs. and must have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

Primary responsibilities: 

Performs archaeological fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and compiles documentation, including field logs and progress reports.  Leads crews under direction of field director or principal investigator, including assisting in the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods.  Assists in writing archaeological reports and/or preparing archaeological site forms.  Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality and safety standards.  Responsible for supporting supervisors as needed, which could include providing data compilation, writing and graphic support, and assembling equipment for field projects.  Ensures communication with principal investigator, project manager, field director, and team members to facilitate successful project completion.  Mentors new or inexperienced staff in proper field or lab methods and ensures field and lab protocols are followed, as directed by supervisors.  Follows AECOM corporate policies and procedures, including safety plans.
 Assumes personal responsibility for furthering education and capabilities to ensure career growth (with support and guidance from supervisors).

Minimum Requirements

BA or BS in anthropology or a related field with a minimum 2 years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology; graduate degree in anthropology or a related field can substitute for 2 years of experience. The candidate will be well versed in standard archaeological techniques to include the excavation of test units and archaeological features. The candidate must be prepared for field, lab, and office tasks, including basic data analysis and report writing. Field projects will primarily be in Arizona and surrounding states but could be located anywhere in the United States, and travel will be required. Valid driver’s license is required. Proficiency in Microsoft applications is required. Writing sample may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred capabilities include completion of an accredited archaeological field school, prior experience as senior field technician or crew chief, and experience with use of global positioning system instruments, and geographic information systems.
