The Arizona Archaeological Council (AAC) is extremely pleased to announce that Governor Ducey vetoed House Bill 2498. The AAC would like to thank all of our members who showed up to legislative committee meetings, wrote letters, sent e-mails, and made phone calls to the legislature and Governor Ducey. We would also like to thank the Coalition for American Heritage, the Society for American Archaeology, the Society for Historic Archaeology, the Register of Professional Archaeologists, the American Cultural Resources Association, the Arizona Site Steward Foundation, the Arizona Preservation Foundation, and the American Rock Art Research Association for their support. We would also like to thank the Tohono O’odham Nation, San Carlos Apache Tribe, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for their support in opposition of the bill, as well as the tireless efforts of numerous individuals that stepped up and kept the momentum going through this arduous process. Finally, I would like to thank Governor Ducey for listening to Arizona’s tribal communities and heritage resource professionals. We still have a lot of work to do, but can move forward with confidence that are voices will be heard.
