    PROJECT DIRECTOR – Fulltime/Permanent – $52,000 to $65,000/year commensurate with experience.

    The successful candidate either will be currently permitted or meet the qualifications to be immediately permitted as a Project Director/Field Director with a variety of public land managing agencies at the Federal and state level with particular emphasis the on U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management, and in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico. Experience in California, Idaho, west Texas, and western Colorado is also beneficial but not necessary. The position requires the ability to supervise cultural resources surveys and other archaeological projects in remote locations and over steep terrain, and often requires camping for a week or more at a time. Therefore, a clean driving record and the ability to work out-of-town for multiple sequential field sessions are also essential. The successful candidate will provide demonstrable expertise supervising all aspects of cultural resources survey, site recording and site significance evaluations, as well as technical report writing. Experience with archaeological, monitoring, testing and data recovery is a plus but is not required. Candidates should be well-versed with the completion of survey forms (from a variety of states and federal agencies, but particularly those noted above), operating GPS units with a data recorder, and conducting quality control/quality assurance reviews of data. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of Federal cultural resources regulations (particularly National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 compliance), the ability to coordinate and communicate with agencies and clients and manage budgets and schedules. The candidates also should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized. Applicants must have at least a master’s degree in Anthropology or Archaeology and a minimum of five years of work experience as a supervisory archaeologist (e.g., Crew Chief, Project/Field Director). This position also has potential for advancement to Principal Investigator/Project Manager, if or when the candidate meets the necessary requirements. The ideal candidate is someone who desires a long-term career in archaeology/CRM (preferably with EnviroSystems) with advancements in responsibilities and commensurate compensation based on demonstrable abilities and competence.

    Project Director Responsibilities

    • Managing cultural resource projects of various scopes and sizes
    • Supervising archaeological field crews
    • Directing cultural resources inventories with in-field analyses and documentation of prehistoric and/or historic artifacts and archaeological features
    • Authoring and editing site documentation forms and writing technical reports

    Project Director Qualifications

    • Graduate degree in archaeology or anthropology
    • At least 5 years supervisory archaeology and fieldwork experience
    • Ability to be listed on EnviroSystems’ various federal and state cultural resource permits
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills
    • Good technical writing skills with a record of completing, editing, and producing cultural resource compliance reports, and meeting deadlines
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment requiring multitasking, task prioritization, and responsibility/task delegation without strict supervision

    The Desert Research Institute (DRI) in Las Vegas, NV is accepting applications for a Staff Research Scientist, Archaeologist.  This is a faculty position that serves in an archaeology support role for DRI Archaeology Principal Investigators (PIs). Key responsibilities include:

    • Assisting with identification, evaluation, finding of effect assessment, management recommendation, and proposed treatment activities related to archaeological inventories, surface collections, subsurface testing and data recoveries, and geoarchaeological studies.
    • Assisting with pedestrian inventories, resource documentation, and surface and subsurface investigations.
    • Assisting with archaeological and geoarchaeological laboratory work.
    • Assisting with preparation of site forms, preparing maps using a Geographic Information System (GIS), and other resource-related documents.
    • Organizing data for technical reports.

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Anthropology, Archaeology, Physical Geography, or Interdisciplinary Studies that combine one or more of these disciplines
    • Experience working on governmental agency Section 106 compliance projects
    • Experience with pedestrian inventories and/or geoarchaeological investigations
    • Ability to conduct fieldwork in remote settings sometimes in extreme temperatures

    Compensation/Benefits

    The minimum annual starting salary for the Staff Research Scientist position is $56,267. Salary is commensurate with experience and education. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance; including 17.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.     The School of Human Evolution and Social Change (SHESC) at Arizona State University is recruiting one Postdoctoral Research Scholar under the supervision of the Curator of Collections, Center for Archaeology and Society Repository (CASR). The postdoctoral research scholar will oversee the documentation and organization of archaeological collections subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) from Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) administered land. Human remains, funerary objects, and other cultural items were removed from Tribal reservation lands by staff of the Office of Cultural Resource Management and faculty of the former Department of Anthropology. To assist the BIA with repatriation, the collections must be located, inventoried, compared to existing documentation, and readied for repatriation. Additionally, non-NAGPRA collections will be prepared for transfer of custody, as specified by the BIA.

    This is an in-person, full-time, fiscal-year, term-limited 1-year position, which may be renewable for a second year, contingent on funding and satisfactory performance. Job expectations are contingent on current and future obligations specified in BIA cooperative agreement. Applicants must be within five years of receipt of their Ph.D. to be considered. The anticipated start date is January of 2024.

    • Ph.D. in anthropology or related fields by the time of appointment.

    The Arizona State Museum (ASM) Archaeological Records Office (ARO) is hiring an Archaeological Records Specialist (PC2).

    The position is a 1.0 full-time equivalency (FTE) university staff position within the Collections Division of the ASM, University of Arizona (UA), reporting to the ARO manager. The position assists in the administration and implementation of the Arizona Antiquities Act (AAA; A.R.S. 41-841 et seq.), and ensures compliance with all related policies and procedures outlined by state and federal laws and Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) rules. The incumbent will process, manage, curate, and facilitate access to archaeological site and project records in the ARO. Using archaeological records held in the ARO and other ASM offices, they will conduct research on behalf of clients in CRM archaeology.

    The ideal candidate for this position will model the highest degree of professionalism, work ethic, and interpersonal engagement with colleagues and clients while working to support the museum’s state-mandated programs and policies.     Duties and Responsibilities:

    Approximately 50 percent of the employee’s time is spent on submission review and curation of archaeological site and project records in the ARO. The other 50 percent of the employee’s time is spent performing tasks that allow ASM’s clients to access, use, and understand the ARO’s archaeological records.

    Submission Review and Curation:

    • Receives and reviews project submission materials (ASM Site Cards, Project Registration Forms, reports, and digital images) by checking for completeness, communicating results to clients, and preparing submission materials for curation.
    • Conducts project tracking that includes entering incoming job information into workflows contained within the Mandated Programs databases.
    • Assesses payment status and maintains a database inventory of incoming project submission materials.
    • Maintains paper and electronic records, including USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle maps illustrating archaeological site boundaries.

    Assisting ASM’s Clients with ARO Records:

    • Assists with in-office and virtual ARO visitor services, including providing access to and facilitating use of archaeological records and USGS 7.5-minute maps.
    • Fulfills document requests that may include archaeological reports, ASM site cards, and Project Registration Forms.
    • Conducts archaeological records research for archaeologists and for non-archaeologists, prepares summary reports of the results, and produces GIS-generated maps.
    • Assists with supervision and training of ARO students and volunteers.

    Additional Duties:

    • Additional duties may be assigned including (but not limited to) providing assistance to the ASM AAA Permits Office, the State Repatriation Office, and the Repository, as appropriate.

    • Experience reading USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle maps and an understanding of Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates and the Public Lands Survey System (PLSS).
    • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software, especially creating/editing shapefiles and exporting maps.
    • Experience working with AZSITE, the online GIS that serves as a consolidated informational network of recorded cultural resources for the State of Arizona.
    • Experience working with relational databases, especially with import/export functions and query and report creation.
    • Experience and skill in customer service.

    The Faunal Analyst position (Anthropologist-Archaeologist O) conducts analysis (taxonomic identification, body part definition, and processing evidence) of animal and, as needed, human remains from archaeological sites excavated by Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) and other organizations and works on archaeological projects for clients.

    How does it get done?

    Conducts processing, inventory, and analysis of faunal and human remains for OAS projects. Provides bone identifications at time of discovery by OAS or others as requested. Works with Project Directors to understand project goals, timelines, and budgets. Conducts analyses with a focus on analytical quality while staying within prescribed timelines and budget. This position produces analytical and research data summaries for analyzed remains and sites and authors reports detailing results of archaeological field investigations and analyses under the supervision of the Project Director. The position also prepares faunal and/or human remains analysis sections of reports and conducts research within prescribed timelines and make revisions when requested in a timely manner. The employee will occasionally operate in outdoor settings and assist with the archaeological survey, test excavation, monitoring, and data recovery activities as assigned. This position requires an ability to conduct a full day of work in remote settings carrying necessary equipment and an understanding of the types of artifacts and features that may be encountered. This position also participates in OAS Education Outreach program, in the planning and implementation of innovative education programs, and aids in the development of such relationships with other DCA divisions.

    This position serves private clients, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and the general public.

    Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with one (1) year of archaeological survey and excavation experience; at least six (6) months of experience in New Mexico archaeology; extensive graduate or professional training in faunal analysis and some training in human remains analysis; prior experience excavating human burials and is qualified to be permitted on the unmarked human burial excavation permit.

    Position:    Archaeologist

    The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs) are some of the most diverse in the Southwestern Region, encompassing about 2.5 million acres including an extensive amount of the Mogollon Rim and the White Mountains. The Forests stretch from Leonard Canyon south of Winslow, Arizona to the New Mexico state line, then south of Springerville, Arizona to Clifton, Arizona. The landscape varies from high desert grasslands to above timberline with ponderosa, aspen, and spruce-fir forests in between. The Forests' elevations range from 3,500 feet on the Clifton Ranger District to over 11,000 feet on the Mount Baldy Wilderness. The ANSFs is home to a large part of the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains, rich in beauty and tranquility. Water is a major attraction with 24 lakes and reservoirs and more than 400 miles of rivers and streams - more than can be found in any other southwestern forest. The Forests supply timber, wildlife, grazing and tourism which help support local communities.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    The resource assistant will be stationed out of the Supervisor’s Office in Springerville, AZ reporting to the Forest Archaeologist and/or the Assistant Forest Archaeologist. The resource assistant will be involved in various projects across the Forest that relate to the Wildfire Crisis Strategy and Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. They will learn pre-field research, survey techniques, identification of archaeological sites (pueblos, field houses, lithic scatters, historic features, and sites), identification of lithics and ceramics, recordation of archaeological sites, and use of GPS and tablets in the field.

    Special or Preferred skills.

    • Knowledge of Southwest Archaeology
    • Comfortable working independently outside in all weather conditions
    • Use of four-wheel drive vehicles and driving on rough roads
    • Knowledge of Section 106 and National Environmental Policy Act

    Minimum Qualifications.

    • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Anthropology
    • US citizenship or permanent residency. 
    • Must pass a criminal history background check and possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

    Senior Project Manager – Cultural Resources

    What you will accomplish

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field.
    • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in archaeology.
    • Minimum of ten (10) years of cultural resources experience supporting a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies, with increasing levels of responsibility.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Cultural Resources Management in a supervisory capacity, whether in the field or in the office.
    • Experience managing CRM projects, including budgets, scheduling, and scopes of work.
    • Qualified for listing on state and federal archaeology permits Arizona statewide.
    • Extensive experience with Arizona archaeology, or similar cultural area.
    • Demonstrated experience in federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to the management of cultural resources (NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA)

    Project Manager – Cultural Resources

    Assistant Project Archaeologist - Field Director

    What you will accomplish

    • Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring and ensure quality and completeness of data collected.
    • Data QA/QC, organization, and tracking; field GPS data collection using tablets and Geodes. 
    • Ensure that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, and that necessary equipment, staff, and other resources are prepared for fieldwork.
    • Accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features, and train less experienced field crew in their identification.
    • Create and maintain good morale among field crew and mentor junior staff.
    • Assist with office-based tasks, including performing Class I literature reviews, research, site forms, technical report preparation, developing and tracking scopes of work, schedules, and budgets.
    • Communicate effectively when reporting to Team Leads, Principal Investigators, and Project Managers.
    • Work independently in a responsible manner.
    • Work within defined schedules and meet deadlines.
    • Follow all SWCA health and safety procedures.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field is required.
    • Minimum three (3) years or more of experience working as a field archaeologist in the Southwest.
    • Has led crews of field technicians on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.
    • Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation, and paperwork are complete.
    • Excellent leadership and supervision abilities, including problem-solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.
    • Has demonstrated skills relating to QA/QC review of field documents and site forms.
    • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes), plus additional hours organizing paperwork/emails daily
    • Ability to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
    • Ability to provide guidance and feedback on crew performance as per company guidelines.
    • Has enough experience to be able to rationally deal with the unexpected (changes in weather, changes in client demands, changes in crew makeup or size, etc.).
    • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, and ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads.

    Summary:

    The position completes the cultural resources reviews for all the federal-aid projects. This position also assists with maintenance work orders, disposals, material source pits, and other state funded projects. This position is responsible for ensuring the technical completeness of documentation, is part of the Historic Preservation Team and will be supervised by the Historic Preservation Team Lead.

    Duties:

    Manage and oversee consultant activities relating to archaeological surveys, site flagging, monitoring, testing, and data recovery; and assessment of historic buildings and structures. Review technical reports, including overviews, surveys, testing and data recovery work plans, and final data recovery reports for adequacy and compliance. Work with consultants to ensure delivery of product by project deadlines.

    Coordinate and consult with other state and federal agencies, local governments, and tribes on cultural resources and historic preservation issues, including site eligibility and project effects. Prepare and review Section 106 documents, including Memorandum of Agree ment, Programmatic Agreements, and letters. Develop requests for proposals as necessary and review consultant proposals and budgets. Provide cultural resource input to environmental documents.

    Telephone and email consultation, project facilitation, and answering questions to facilitate the project management process.

    Communicate with Historic Preservation Team Lead/Cultural Resources Program Manager on a weekly basis to ensure adequate review of work projects, inform HPT Lead of potential problems in the completion of the work that may affect project schedules or budget, and discuss with HPT Lead difficult or complex projects. Fill in for Planner III on an as-needed basis during flex days, vacation, sick days to ensure continuity and flow in the project clearance process and serve customers.

    Work on emergency, non-standard or accidental discovery projects to ensure agency compliance with appropriate cultural resource laws. Review projects and update project reports and databases for tracking.

    Participate in team, group, and miscellaneous meetings and training as required by the supervisor. Must be able to drive a state vehicle during the course and scope of work.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

    State, Federal, Tribal, local agency policies, procedures, and regulations to effectively manage and facilitate cultural resources clearances/projects.

    Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

    Principles of historic preservation, archaeological methods, and Arizona history and prehistory

    Verbal and written communication and facilitation to interact daily with ADOT personnel, outside agency personnel, tribes, consultants, and the public.

    Project management to facilitate completion of large projects on tight and often changing schedules.

    Phone and email usage; skills  to address archaeological data recovery situations.

    Google Systems and Basic computer skills, use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positions System (GPS), are desired, but not required.

    Manage multiple tasks, while shepherding large projects through a complex and often changing process

    Preference:

    Additional training in Section 106 of NHPA, Arizona Historic Preservation Act, and other State and Federal cultural resource law.

    Experience collecting class I data (AZSITE, HPT Portal, City of Phoenix database, GLOs, etc.). 

    Field experience in prehistory and historic archaeology.

    Experience in drafting small survey and monitoring reports.

    Requirements:

    This position requires possession of a Bachelor’s degree or above in archaeology, anthropology, history or in a related field.

    This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.

    Position Summary
