    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The Director of Outreach is responsible for developing and implementing educational programs and volunteer opportunities for Archaeology Southwest. Other key duties include maintaining the organization’s social media presence, marketing Archaeology Southwest programs, and assisting in maintaining the organization’s websites. The Director of Outreach is a key member of a small but hardworking and effective Outreach Team that includes the Content & Communications Director, Director of Development, Development Coordinator, and the Hands-On archaeologist.

    Location:

    As of December 1, 2021, this position will be Tucson-based and in person. It is Archaeology Southwest’s expectation that all personnel—employees, contractors, and volunteers—will follow CDC guidelines on the COVID-19 vaccination, mask requirements, and preventative hygiene.

    Salary Rate: 60,000 per year

    Responsibilities:

    Educational Programs

    • Plan and coordinate the Archaeology Café series and other adult educational programming, including the Undergraduate Class Packets service
    • Represent Archaeology Southwest at events such as the Arizona Archaeology Expo and Festival of Books
    • Coordinates the Hands-On program

    Volunteer Programs

    • Manage volunteer programs and activities
    • Create and implement a community scientist volunteer program to meet the needs of the cyberSW project, in coordination with the cyberSW Manager
    • Identify and implement other volunteer opportunities that further Archaeology Southwest’s mission and programs
    • Recruit, vet, train, schedule, and supervise volunteers
    • Maintain volunteer policies and protocols 

    Social Media & Marketing

    • Maintain an active social media presence for the organization (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) in coordination with Archaeology Southwest’s Content & Communications Director
    • Use the organization’s internal communication channels (website, social media, mailings) to publicize Archaeology Southwest events, classes, and programs
    • Implement the effective use of images, including short videos, to share Archaeology Southwest’s mission and programs through various channels
    • Manage photo archive
    • Oversee maintenance and functionality of the website (shared/cross-trained with Development Coordinator)

    Qualifications and Skills:

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in public archaeology or outdoor education programs
    • M.A. or M.S. in archaeology preferred
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to convey Archaeology Southwest messages across a range of audiences
    • Familiarity and fluency in major social media programs, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube
    • Must be able to work independently and as part of the team
    • Strong leadership skills with an ability to connect and communicate with a wide range of communities and individuals – a “people person”
    • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and assignments and meet deadlines

    The Center for Digital Antiquity (CDA) at Arizona State University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for an anticipated 18-month appointment. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, fiscal-year appointment with an anticipated start date in January 2022. In collaboration with CDA researchers, the successful applicant will work on the Comparative Digital Archaeological Studies sponsored by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).  The postdoctoral researcher will work with DPAA materials to explore how the management and organization of archaeological data can enhance the recovery of missing service personnel.  The position will develop and execute a collaborative research project that will increase the applied and scholarly impact of the DPAAs datasets, by leveraging the unique capabilities of tDAR (the Digital Archaeological Record; www.tdar.org). The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to work with the DPAA to create project deliverables and publish the results of this research in appropriate venues. The postdoctoral position is scheduled to be in effect for a total of 18 months given that the candidate has satisfactory performance, there are funds available and based on University needs.  The annual salary for this position is $50,500 per year. The associate does not need to be in residence in Tempe, Arizona during the appointment, but is preferred.

    As currently conceived, the project will develop computation models to assess landscapes in regions of interest by aggregating existing hard-copy data from DPAA reports, along with freely available spatial gridded environmental data.  Using known recovery locations of missing service personnel contained in existing reports, archaeological data, and a suite of environmental data, the project seeks to understand where other missing service personnel are likely, or not, to be recovered in the future. 

    The Center for Digital Antiquity (CDA) at Arizona State University is a multi-institutional organization dedicated to ensuring the long-term preservation of irreplaceable archaeological data and to broadening access to these data. Our mission is to extend our knowledge of the human past and improve the management of our cultural heritage by permanently preserving digital archaeological data and supporting their discovery, access, and reuse. As part of fulfilling these goals, CDA oversees the use, development, and maintenance of the Digital Archaeological Record (tDAR), an international repository for the digital records of archaeological investigations, organizations, projects, and research. One of CDA’s key objectives is to foster the use of tDAR and ensure its financial, technical, and professional sustainability. Use of tDAR has the potential to transform archaeological research by providing direct access to digital data from current and historic investigations along with powerful tools to analyze and reuse it.

    Job duties will include:

    • Organizing hard-copy reports for scanning at DPAA facilities
    • Processing digital documents and metadata in tDAR
    • Data mining using conventional or Natural Language Processing techniques
    • Building datasets for use in GIS
    • Preparation of reports and manuscripts
    • Other duties as assigned

    Anthropology Collections Archivist

    Job Description

    The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified Anthropological Collections Archivist to manage archival materials housed in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository. Duties include the development of standards, policies, and procedures for the arrangement, tracking, description, and preservation of archival materials to ensure their proper care, access, and use in perpetuity. Anthropological collections housed at the Repository include materials collected by faculty of the former Department of Anthropology, materials donated to the Repository by private individuals, and materials collected during Federally sponsored cultural resource management projects. Associated archival materials are therefore an important resource for collection management, research, and ongoing Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) processes.

    Essential Duties

    • Works with the Curator of Collections to develop and implement archival standards, policies, and practices
    • Participates in the processing, arrangement, inventorying, preservation, and rehousing of archival materials
    • Creates preliminary inventory of archival material and descriptive text for the collections database and other finding aides
    • Works with other collections staff to develop data management procedures for archival materials
    • Accessions newly acquired and existing archival materials
    • Creates and enters accession records to ensure timely and accurate recording of items
    • Evaluates physical condition of archival materials during processing and works with the Curator of Collections and Collections Manager to create plans for appropriate handling, housing, and/or conservation treatments
    • Acts as a liaison to file, retrieve, and fulfill requests for items within the archive
    • Facilitate access to archives for students, researchers, descendant communities, and other stakeholders
    • Participate in the NAGPRA process as needed
    • Provide monthly updates of archival activities
    • Supervise archival activities of student workers and other staff

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years related library experience, one (1) of which includes archives experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skill, and abilities have been achieved.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Evidence of a Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, history, or related library studies
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the appropriate handling and organization of archival collections including paper documents and photographic materials

    SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Staff Archaeologist to join us in our Phoenix office. This is an hourly, full-time position. The Assistant Staff Archaeologist will assist with cultural resources management work within the greater Phoenix area and across Arizona. Successful candidates will assist with conducting archaeological fieldwork (including pedestrian survey, site identification, site recording / data collection, monitoring and data recovery excavations) and office-based tasks (preparation of site forms, writing technical reports, occasional lab analysis) to support our Phoenix office. There may also be opportunities to support our other AZ offices as the need arises. 

    What you will accomplish

    • Conduct fieldwork for long hours in various environments including, but not limited to, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and rugged terrain.
    • Carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Available for local projects and fieldwork requiring extended travel (staying in a hotel or camping for up to 8 days at a time).
    • Accurately identify historic and prehistoric artifacts and features.
    • Assist with cultural resource records searches, laboratory analysis tasks, and other office work, as needed.

    Experience and qualifications for success

    • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.

    • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation, and paperwork are complete.

    This position provides assistance to the Sustainability and Conservation Director, Cultural Resources Manager, Cultural Resource Program Manager, other County departments as appropriate, and the private sector and involves program-related community relations activities. This position requires professional and highly specialized historic preservation knowledge and experience to ensure compliance with County, state, and federal historic preservation laws and policies. Most work is in an office setting, but some fieldwork is required.

    Under general supervision of the Cultural Resources Manager, performs various professional planning, review, and management tasks related to cultural resources management and historic preservation, with an emphasis on compliance reviews and the identification, evaluation and documentation of historic resources. Coordinates, monitors, and participates in administrative and operational activities associated with the Cultural Resources Compliance Program within Pima County working within the Office of Sustainability and Conservation, with Cultural Resources & Historic Preservation Division staff.

    This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

    10) liaison with other County departments, the public, other local governments, regulatory agencies, and tribal governments, as necessary; and;

    11) write and submit grant applications and prepare/review proposals;

    • Coordinates, supervises and participates in the activities of a specialized program;
    • Provides support and participates in the daily activities essential to the completion of program objectives;
    • Coordinates program activities with other departments, governmental agencies and the public;

    Job Summary:

    This new position incorporates work that is being completed by a supplemental employee who is the HPT Portal Administrator and also fulfills a gap in our environmental compliance fo State funded projects. Under the direction of the Cultural Resources Program Manager, this position is responsible for coordinating with new and existing HPT Portal users, acting as a liaison between various ADOT departments, and consulting with state, federal, and Native American communities. Additionally, this position will manage the State Act PA and complete all consultation associated with these state funded projects.

    Job Duties:

    Manage Portal accounts of highly sensitive agency data, update contacts in the Portal including attaining security clearances, partners with FHWA on agency contact list, differentiates data sets to determine appropriate information for Portal Database, coordinates with the Arizona State Museum's AZSITE on data information transfer of ADOT highway system, and collaborates with ITG to improve the Portal mapping application

    Interprets and applies applicable federal and state laws, regulations, policies and procedures in consultation and liaison with other state and federal agencies, local governments, and Tribes on cultural resources and historic preservation issues related to maintenance work orders, disposals, material sources, and encroachment permits.

    Evaluates legacy cultural resources reports to ensure they still meet current archaeological standards, reviews and approves new cultural resources survey, monitoring, testing/data recovery reports to ensure that the work meets ASM and SHPO requirements. Drafts clear, concise consultation documents for project requirements and State Historic Preservation Act specifications. Determines whether consultation letters or memos are the appropriate form of documentation for the particular project.

    Identifies and flags Archaeological sites for avoidance as needed for maintenance projects, assess archaeological sites using professional discretion and independent judgement for National Register of Historic Places eligibility, if previously unclear, Organize field visits with Tribes for Material Source projects

    Responsible for independent decision-making implementing the PA between Arizona SHPO and ADOT, prepares quarterly batch reports and yearly reporting, interprets and evaluates conditions of PA stipulations and makes recommendations to management on whether current stipulations may need to be modified

    Schedule and conduct travel, possible overnight Travel and lodging along with Driving a state vehicle in the course and scope of duties

    Job Description

    The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified Curatorial Specialist to assist the Collections Manager in the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository. Duties include the review of records, summarization of collections recovery context and curation history, updating of collections information and inventories, assessment and enhancement of collections conditions, and the supervision of student interns and employees. Archaeological collections house at the Repository include materials collected by faculty of the former Department of Anthropology, materials donated to the Repository by private individuals, and materials collected during Federally sponsored cultural resource management projects. Repository collections include over 350,000 catalog numbers of Native American archaeological and ethnographic objects, primarily from Arizona.

    Essential Duties

    • Assist with the inventorying, documentation, organization, and rehousing of Repository collections
    • Participate in the preparation of summary documentation and reports for collections detailing recovery information and curation history
    • Assist with the updating of information in Repository collection management software
    • Assist with the evaluation and documentation of the conditions of collections
    • Participate in the monitoring and reporting of environmental conditions and pests within Repository spaces
    • Assist with facilitating access to collections for students, researchers, descendant communities, and other stakeholders
    • Participate in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) process as needed
    • Move and transport materials and objects that could weight up to 50 pounds, including the storage of items at heights that require the use of a ladder
    • Preform duties in both climate-controlled and external spaces

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Art, or related field AND one year of museum curatorial and/or registration experience; OR, five years museum curatorial and/or registration experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    • Experience working with anthropological collections (3 years)

    Minimum Qualifications:

    1)  An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Anthropology or other closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing the completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered.     2)  Evidence of scholarly potential, including but not limited to publications, conference presentations, and funding.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 1)      Evidence of research experience in one or more of the following areas: environmental archaeology, zooarchaeology, CRM, archaeobotany, ethnobotany, landscape archaeology, and geoarchaeology.
    • 2)   Evidence of effective teaching or potential for effective teaching.
