    Tierra Right of Way Services, Ltd. (Tierra), is seeking temporary field technicians for survey and excavation projects.  Crew members perform duties associated with archaeological survey and the excavation of archaeological sites.  May also be responsible for monitoring at construction sites.

    A crew member works on projects which may last a short period of time or a longer period of time, from just a couple of days to several months.  Working hours may vary from day to day and week to week and overtime may or may not be available.  

    Essential Functions and General Responsibilities:

    • Takes detailed field notes, draws sketch maps, excavates archaeological features, bags artifacts and records provenience of the finds during surveys, monitoring and excavations
    • Navigates and records data with a Garmin, Trimble and computer tablet 
    • Uses a Brunton compass and USGS topographic maps
    • Maintains tools and equipment
    • Takes photographs with a camera or cell phone
    • Walks survey transects on survey crew
    • Excavates various types of archaeological features
    • Performs other related responsibilities as needed

    Travel

    This position requires frequent overnight travel and extended stays. Some projects require camping in remote environments.

    Work Environment:

    This position requires work in remote areas and frequent exposure to outdoor elements, wildlife, rough terrain, and extreme temperatures.

    Senior Staff Scientist (Archaeologist) at Terracon Consultants, Inc.

    General Responsibilities:

    Conduct cultural records reviews, archaeological surveys, Phase I testing, Phase II data recovery, archaeological monitoring, archaeological mitigation, preparation of archaeological plans and reports, and contribute cultural information for environmental documents. Identify, evaluate and recommend risk and mitigation strategies/designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. Prepare applicable risk assessments and technical documents including proposals, reports and regulatory agency correspondence.

    Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

    • Mid-level, experienced, scientific professional able to manage small- and medium-sized cultural resources projects across the U.S. Southwest.
    • Ability to complete projects on-time and within budget.
    • Field director for survey, excavation and monitoring fieldwork.
    • Work with senior staff to prepare cost estimates and proposals from small and medium-size projects.
    • Evaluate field and laboratory data, synthesizing into written reports.

    Requirements:

    • Ability to perform all aspects of archaeological fieldwork in outdoor settings year-round within the U.S. Southwest.
    • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

    Desired qualifications:

    • Possess Principal Investigator status on an Arizona Antiquities Act permit or a General Archaeological Investigation Permit for archaeological investigations in New Mexico.
    • Be listed or demonstrate ability to be listed on a BLM cultural resources use permit in the US Southwest.

    The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service (Zion National Park), is recruiting an Archaeologist to lead various park compliance projects under the supervision of the Zion Cultural Resource Program Manager. These projects are related to archeological duties in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). Projects may include: the preparation of compliance documents (Assessment of Effects Forms for Section 106 and Section 110), working with interdisciplinary teams to prepare compliance packages, submitting compliance packages to the UT SHPO, and preparing archeological resource protection strategies and treatment plans specifically related to potential impacts from identified management needs and proposed management actions.

    The position is primarily office-based work. The work will include data management, preparation of reports and management documents, and quality control of products produced by other employees and/or contractors. Data management will involve the use of three databases to enter and organize archaeology records, all maps and illustrations will be digitized using graphic programs (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator), photographs will be labeled, uploaded, and annotated, spatial data will be processed and added to the master archaeology geodatabase, and project records will be prepared for Museum Archives. Reports and management documents will include environmental reviews of park undertakings, as well as other products such as: consultation letters, project reports, monitoring reports, finding aids, and scope of works. Additionally, this position will supervise other staff and contractors conducting archeological field work and data entry. This position will provide the training necessary for these individuals, moreover, this position will perform quality control on the efforts and products produced by these individuals.

    Field work duties will include the responsibilities of training crew member field techniques and methods, supervising and conducting data entry, digital records management, monitoring of construction activities and will entail: navigating with topographic maps, completing site forms, taking scale photographs, making scale illustrations, conducting condition assessments and fuels assessments, collecting spatial data, producing artifact illustrations, identifying artifacts, and making determinations of eligibility. Additional field work may include monitoring and treatment activities, along with supplementary documentation, such as: drainage re-routing, barrier installation, social trail eradication, installation of signs, minor stabilization, backfilling, and/or data recovery. Approximately 25% of time will be spent in the field during the course of this position. Temperatures in the summer regularly exceed 90-100° F and monsoons occur during July-September. Occasional camping will be required.

    The Great Basin Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing environmental research, education, and service throughout the West. GBI’s Research Associate Program provides multidisciplinary capacity for professional support of diverse partnerships across western states while presenting emerging professionals with career-enhancing opportunities in natural/cultural/recreation resource management, ecological conservation, environmental stewardship, and related fields. The Archaeologist will gain exposure to policies and approaches for managing cultural resources on public lands and enhance their experience in standard techniques for archaeological field documentation, management of associated data, and reporting.

     

    Timeline:

    • 37-week appointment beginning February, 2022

    Location:

    Zion National Park is a unique geological, natural, and cultural treasure in southwestern Utah. Opportunities for sightseeing, hiking, and camping abound. Humans have occupied this area for approximately 10,000 years and archaeological sites occur throughout the park. Work will be based out of park offices in Springdale, UT.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    • Capacity to work independently and within a team environment;
    • Must be motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail oriented in order to balance multiple tasks simultaneously;
    • Physically fit to work long hours outdoors, carry personal and field equipment, and withstand the climatic rigors of the desert;
    • Willingness and ability to camp for consecutive days, as needed, in backcountry settings; and
    • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on unimproved roads.

    Archaeological Consulting Services (ACS), now a Commonwealth Heritage Group, Inc. Company, has been providing cultural resource services in Arizona for 44 years and environmental planning services for 20+ years. ACS, now the Tempe, Arizona office of Commonwealth, is seeking to hire an experienced cultural resource Principal Investigator (PI) in a full-time role.

    Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Anthropology (Archaeology);
    • qualify as a Project Director and Principal Investigator for our Arizona state permit (requirements can be found here: https://statemuseum.arizona.edu/crm/documents);
    • 10+ years of experience in archaeology (Southwest preferred), with two as a PI;
    • Three+ years of experience managing multiple small and mid-size projects and providing support for larger (>$1M) projects;

    • track record for conducting and reporting on relevant research;
    • registration with the Register of Professional Archaeologists (preferred); and
    • ideally, have a close familiarity with the performance of such tasks in Arizona and under ADOT contracts.

    The successful candidate’s experience must include project management; working with clients and regulators; assessing National Register of Historic Places eligibility; preparing research designs, treatment plans, and budgets for proposals of all types; monitoring field progress; coordinating with the lab and with report authors; writing and compiling reports; and drafting consultation documents. Experience managing projects with budgets over $200,000 is desired. Strong supervisory, writing, and verbal communication skills are essential, as is attention to detail. Experience with budgeting and tracking, as well as the ability to bring projects to successful completion on time and within budget, are essential.

    The School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University seeks to hire a qualified NAGPRA Collections Specialist to be responsible for locating, documenting, and assessing funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony in compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Duties include the review of records, documentation of artifacts, updating of collections information and inventories, and the supervision of student interns and employees. Relevant archaeological collections at Arizona State University’s Center for Archaeology and Society Repository include materials collected by faculty of the former Department of Anthropology and materials donated to the Repository by private individuals.

    To prepare these collections in accordance with our repatriation process, relevant collections must be located, documented, assigned to recognized artifact types for cultural affiliation, cataloged according to contemporary archaeological and museum collection management standards and best practices, assessed for removal provenience and context, and the collection information entered into a database.

    Essential Duties

    • Assist with the documentation of NAGPRA objects. In coordination with the NAGPRA Coordinator and Curator of Collections, develop a work plan to identify and match individual collection objects with information in field notes, collections databases, and other archival records.
    • Organize site materials (including archaeological collections and associated documents).
    • Prepare reports (both preliminary and final) to confirm/update existing Notices of Inventory Completion/Notices of Intent to Repatriate and document transfer.
    • Supervise funerary object documentation activities of student interns and workers.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

    Working Environment

    • Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting.
