“Archaeological Field Technician”

FIELD OPERATIONS DIVISION / WILDLIFE CONTRACTS BRANCH / PHOENIX BASED 

REGULAR APPOINTMENT / PART TIME / FLSA-Non-Exempt

GRADE 16 (Hiring hourly range $14.14-$18.00)

Description of Duties: Under general supervision, duties will include performing a variety of technical and professional cultural resource management work in support of the Department’s Cultural Resource Compliance Program (CRCP) archaeologist/ project director.  Duties may also include assistance to project managers in one or more wildlife management and/or research programs in the wildlife contracts branch.  Primary duties will include, but are not limited to: assisting with the necessary planning, research, and preparation for Class I and III cultural resource surveys; assisting with various Class III intensive pedestrian surveys or monitoring projects in a variety of natural environments around the state; recording prehistoric and historic resources utilizing a Trimble Geo XH 6000 series handheld GPS unit and other field recording devices; aiding the AGFD CRCP project director with the preparation of Class I and III cultural resource reports; and filling out proper state and federal cultural resource forms, photo logs, site forms; As well as, preparing documents for determinations of eligibility to the State and National Register of Historic Places.  The successful applicant must have flexible availability to accommodate dynamic project schedules.  Frequent travel to different areas of the state will be typical.  Depending on the area of the state, camping may be required for the duration of a project.  Assignments may require extended periods working and residing in primitive field conditions and operating a variety of water and land vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate will have knowledge of/in: federal, state, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures appropriate to assignment. Candidate must possess cultural resource management and archaeological knowledge sufficient to perform the duties assigned, including; proper operation, maintenance and basic repair of field equipment and vehicles.  Candidate must possess critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary for duties assigned by the CRCP project director. The ideal candidate will have the skills to learn and apply more specific and/or advanced policies, procedures, and techniques, basic professional standard data collection, analysis, mathematics, basic report preparation methods, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.   The candidate must have the ability to: interact with the public and apply public relations; work alone and as part as a team; able to work outdoors in primitive field conditions that may sometimes be in extreme climates; as well as hike, backpack and/or camp overnight for extended periods of time.  Candidate must have the physical ability to bend, kneel, stand, lift, hike over 10 miles a day, and carry at least 50 pounds while performing fieldwork.

The preferred candidate will have:

  • A Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, and at least three years of cultural resource management experience.  Candidates with a bachelor’s degrees and at least 4 years of field experience as an archaeological technician will be considered.  Candidates must demonstrate experience in excavation, pedestrian survey, and monitoring.
  • Demonstrated working experience in the southwestern United States.
  • Experience collecting data in the field, processing that data in the office/lab, and assisting with the preparation of cultural resource compliance reports or research publications.
  • Employment is contingent upon completion of a post-offer medical/physical examination, a background check and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.  Position requires possession of or ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
